This guy was one of the fiercest competitors in SMU history. Its a shame the Hall of Fame has overlooked him. He always gets blasted for the 66 Title game here versus Green Bay, but take away Meredith an the Cowboys are the same. When he was with the Cowboys, he and Bob Hayes defined the bomb.

Also, its also fun to go back and look at the great quarterbacks we have had here. Gerald Mann, Bob Finley, Gil Johnson, Fred Benners, Dandy Don, Mike Livingston, Chuck Hixson, Mike Ford, and Lance McIlhenny. These were all top notch guys.

Ricky Wesson, Don King, and Bobby Watters were no bums either.

I'd like to see Coach Bennett require the quarterbacks to all meet with McIlhenny to listen to a winner talk about leading SMU. Plus, I think it would be good for them to know the school's QB history.

I knew Meredith while I was at SMU. He was a very nice guy and one of the most exciting football players I have ever seen on the field. In those days SMU drew 45-60,000 fans to the Cotton Bowl. He would diagram plays in the turf for the team..something that drove Landry crazy when he joined the Cowboys... Sports Illustrated called the SMU "collapse" in 1958 (I think it was 58 and not 59) the "Failure of the star system" as all the players came to rely so heavily on Meredith that they let up playing hard. And he would still almost pull out the game single handidly. A GREAT player!

Meredith now lives outside of Santa Fe, NM. SMU needs to make more of an effort to get him to return to the school each year for recognition of his accomplishments as a Mustang.

The last time he was here was SMU v. Navy

He and Roger Staubach were both present for the 'pre-game' activities. Interestingly, Meredith drew more interest and fans who gathered around him than 'The Dodger'.

Although I no longer watch professional football in person or on TV, I would watch the telecasts if Meredith were back on the air. "Monday Night Football" was AWESOME when he was on the air!!!!!
