SMU Sports Statistician Dave Yaggy Dies

Postby MrMustang1965 » Sun Jun 26, 2005 11:39 pm

Some of you may remember Dave Yaggy, who kept stats for the SMU on-air broadcasts over the years. He was also one of my coaches at Highland Park Middle School. A wonderful man and a friend of SMU...he will be missed. :( Thanks, Coach. You were always there for the Mustangs.

From today's DMN:

YAGGY, DAVID JAMES, Age 59, of Lewisville, formerly of Irving, died Thursday, June 23, 2005 at Presbyterian Hospital of Plano. He was born December 2, 1945 in Cherokee, Iowa to Jason H. and Faye Bales Yaggy. Dave earned his bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University upon graduation from high school, and remained a Texas resident until his death. He also attended North Texas State University to further his continuing education. Dave was a longtime physics and science teacher in public and private high schools and middle schools, primarily in the Dallas area. His career as an educator was highlighted by his 13-year tenure at MacArthur High School in Irving from 1988 to 2001. Dave worked concurrently in various sports statistician positions during his weekends and other free time, including a 25-year partnership with Verne Lundquists broadcast team, first locally and then with CBS Sports. He also volunteered his services in a variety of officiating and statistician duties for various local high school and other sports teams. Dave was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Dennis Deischl. Survivors include his sister, Janne Deischl of Houston; brother, Clark Yaggy and wife Marilyn of Marietta, GA; nieces and nephews, Anne Bishop and husband Dan of Montclair, VA, Patrick Yaggy and wife Carissa of Sugar Hill, GA, Scott Deischl and wife Kim of Beaumont, Molly Prim and husband John of Houston, great nephews Jason Deischl of Beaumont, Joshua Prim and Paul Prim, both of Houston; and great niece, Daniella Bishop of Montclair, VA. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, June 26 at Donnelly's Colonial Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 27 at The Presbyterian Church of Hackberry Creek, 2000 Kinwest Parkway, Irving, Rev. Brian Grassley officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association.
