New Fan & MemberHey everyone!
Just thought I'd make my first post introduing myself. I'm not sure if you can see my real name or not (not like I care if you do) but my name is Jerry. How I became a better fan of the SMU Mustangs can be attributed to the the EA Sports game, NCAA Football 2003. I know that sounds quite odd but before I began playing that game, I was just a closet fan. I never paid any attention to them but quietly cheered them on. I became a closet fan thanks to the mascot, colors, and logo. My dad used to coach with Mike Sneed at Grapevine High School. My dad is now the principle of the Junior High in Liberty, Texas. Anyways, I've always wished I had played for Grapevine but never got a chance since we moved out west of Lubbock. Anyways, SMU was my closet team for college football thanks to the resemblance of my favorite high school team. My first favorite team are the Florida State Seminoles. My older brother was a fan of them, and being that I looked up to him as a role model, I naturally chose the Seminoles as my favorite team. Well, thanks to playing NCAA Football 2003 and beyond, I've grown a new found respect for the SMU Mustangs and actually started to care about how they do. When I play NCAA Football 200x, I always play as SMU even though FSU was my first team. Thanks to NCAA Football and my desire to learn the players each new season, I feel like I've become a better fan. Anyways, enough about that. On to the real stuff. I love the Pony Express. I'm only 23 so I never had a chance to watch Dickerson and James back in college nor did I know anything about Dickerson in the NFL because I never really started watching football religiously until 2000. My favorite pro team is the Dallas Cowboys (just so you all know). On the current team, even though I have yet to watch any games on TV while being stuck here in Cornhusker country, I've grown partial to Chris Phillips, Richuel Massey, and Vincent Chase. Hopefully I'll be accepted here as a true fan as I've been trying to keep up with them the best I can. I know it's been way too long since the Mustangs have seen any bowl games first hand and here's to hoping they will one day soon. Glad to see that the 'Stangs have switched to the CUSA. Anyways, hope to be seeing many of you around and I am really hoping this works at getting me more indepth info on the happenings around Mustang Nation. One quick question though. Are the SMU Mustangs the only D1A school to have the Mustang as a mascot?
Just visited Omaha last May for the first time ever. Nice city and I enjoyed my visit, but would hate to spend a winter there. Brrrr.
You have come to the right place for SMU info and insight. We may not always treat each other very well, but everyone here is a diehard fan. The homepage usually has very good articles on players and recruits that will help you get a feel for where we are in trying to improve our teams. Welcome aboard.
welcome aboard!!!! you're now a honorary mustang fan for life!!!!
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
Thanks everyone.
I get no respect as an SMU fan. My younger sister is a Texas Longhorn fan...not becaue of the team but because of the guys. ![]() My older brother is an FSU fan...but at least because it's the team. Can't argue with him there being that I chose them because of him whereas I chose SMU on my own...so in a sense, they are my actual favorite team because I pay more attention to the Mustangs whereas I just check up on the Seminoles to see how they are doing. Both my older brother and younger sister are also Yankee fans. Freakin' bandwagon fans. ![]() My baby sister (she's 13 now) likes Texas A&M. My baby brother (11 now) likes the Longhorns (only to spite my baby sister). My younger brother (19) likes Texas Tech. So I like SMU for my own personal reasons and all I get is flack for it. Oh well, what has Texas done lately? What about the Yankees? What about the Seminoles? My Seminoles team is [deleted] me off year in and year out due to their inability to get past Miami and their off-the-field issues. Right now, they have the potential to be great but they keep bringing in guys who think they are the annointed. I'm excited about this year for the Mustangs. Just found out I can listen to the games online at TheTicket.com and I'll finally get to watch a game on TV when they play TCU. ![]() I'm an offensive nut when it comes to football so I'll probably be talking more about the offense than defense. However, I've been hearing great things about Humphry at CB. Anyone else here read Phil Steele's College Preview magazine? He talks highly of Humphry. So far Phil Steele's magazine has been the best at predicting. He still predicts them to be the worst in the CUSA but he says they aren't that far behind. I know Bennett doesn't have a good record (something like 6-26) while he's been here but seem to have been improving ever since he took over. Hopefully he stays on for a while longer. Phil Steele seems to think the QB Unit has improved this year compared to last year. Anyone have an idea of who will be starting this year? I keep hearing Jared Romo's name and Tony Eckert's but not Chris Phillips. Romo seems to be able to run but is he a good passer? Steele also likes the Mustangs chances at having a good running game this year. He really likes Cedrick Dorsey but was disappointed with Massey. Anyways, I'm a huge fan of the running game (Dickerson and James were my favorite duo of all time) and I'm really excited to see how Dorsey, Massey, Turner, and Henderson pan out. First thing I just learned when visiting this site was that both Bobby Chase and Vincent Chase were brothers. Wow. Not suprised since they have the same last name but it did surprise me a little being that I wasn't expecting that. Again, thanks for the welcome.

WELCOME! WELCOME! WELCOME! WELCOME! WELCOME! WELCOME! I feel sorry for you having to live under the same roof as a Teasip and an Aggie fan, along with a TT fan. But have no fear: you are amongst friends on this board! I look forward to your continuing posts on www.ponyfans.com. Just wondering: how did you discover www.ponyfans.com? Did you do a Google search?
What town west of Lubbock? Littlefield? Levelland? The first few months of my professional career were in Brownfield...and my ex-wife is from Tahoka, the other direction. Makes a fellow wonder how in the world TTech recruits anyone. Then again, I guess that makes Omaha seem really, really nice.
Yeah, it was a google search using 'SMU football message boards' in the search field. It's the 5th link down.
Searches that Came up Zilch: SMU Mustang forums SMU Mustangs forums Those are the three I tried and the first one I gave is the one that worked.
Played 7th grade ball (football and basketball) for the Muleshoe Mules, then following winter break, moved to Morton, Texas. I played football and ran track there (only ran track to get out of the house though...I hated running but loved the triple-jump). Coach Randy Adair was the coach for the Varsity Mules at the time I was there. I'm not sure if he's still there or not. My dad coached me at Morton my Freshman year. I wasn't a starter but I was still in between positions trying to find one right for me. I was about 5'8" 150 lbs playing DB and WR. I was too slow to be either though. My sophomore year, my dad stepped down and became intern principal at the junior high there. Rex Cumpton stepped in as the new head coach and I found myself at new positions. Standing tall at 5'10" 165 lbs, I became the new starting left guard for the Varsity (mainly because the bigger guys were too stupid to know what to do, I knew every play by heart and I was a hard worker at the position...basically, I was unafraid of anybody at that position). I also played backup DE and was the starter as the deep snapper. After my sophomore year, I skipped my junior year (I was held back one year prior to moving to Muleshoe), and decided to take up a job instead of sports (my mom said it was either sports or a job...I had a love for money ![]()
Good to have you aboardI think that I have died and gone to heaven, what with a non-grad young adult fan becoming a pony fan. Welcome, welcome welcome. Don't be discouraged by our intense desire to overcome our losing football records since 1989. Some of us know that it can be better and will keep pushing the school to get there. You have joined us at a good time with our transfer into the C-USA. And maybe, just maybe, Coach Bennett will put together a competitive team that will give us hope for the future, if not a lot of wins this year. Indicently Jerry, I live in East Texas. We'll try to send you some rain now and then in the dry, golden spread.
