Email to Copeland regarding new Logos

I emailed Copeland the following:

Dear Mr. Copeland, With all due respect, I must inquire as to the reasoning
behind the new athletic logos. Is the reasoning behind them due to the lack of
merchandise sales of the older, more traditional logos? If so, please note that
the reason why the old logo wasn't selling probably has more to do with the
fact that spectator/revenue sports are not doing very well. Sure, SMU's
athletics program is one of the best in the nation, but no one can say the same
about our Football or Men's Basketball program.

Alumni and casual fans alike have a place to talk at http://www.ponyfans.com, though
lately the debate has turned from when our next winning football season might
come to the absurdity of the new logos. It seems like the consensus is going
the same way that it went during the "Mighty Mustang Thunder" experiment a few
years back: Tradition should have precedent over change. Give me a red running
Mustang (like the logo on the helmets) any day.

Refer to the following links: http://www.glass4.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=13649 http://www.glass4.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=13651

Please note that I have no association to the school other than being a very
interested prospective student. I have no SMU merchandise, but would purchase
some if there was something with the old logos on it.

I know you are familiar with the University of Virginia and their athletic
program, since you were the A.D. there for a time. I have loads of ties to that
school and I will tell you why the "V-Sabre" logo caught on there: The old logo
flat out stunk, and the new one was very refined and sleek looking. It was
unique among logos: When someone sees it, everyone knows who it belongs to. SMU
already had that with the running Mustang. The University of Texas has it with
their Longhorn. The University of Southern California has it with the
interlocking "SC" and so on. Therefore, why change the logo? There is only one
running Mustang.

GO MUSTANGS!

Why is he out for that long?

Anyway, I encourage everyone who does not like the logo to send a similar email!

Nice letter. I hope you do make the choice to come to SMU for college.

I also took a look at the Locker Room web site. I found a ton of running pony items. Keep in mind that a red running mustang on a red shirt does not stand out. There are more than plenty red ponys on gray, white and blue shirts.

The locomotive looking Mustang does not look bad.

If all I did was read this board I would have thought that EVERYTHING was the new logo. That is not the case.

So we are offfering something else. - Cool. Buy it if you like it and don't if you don't.

GO MUSTANGS beat baylor.

The Locker Room must have recently added those. I thoroughly checked the site last Friday and all they had was the new logo. I wouldn't mind a white Mustang either :D but let's keep the running Mustang over the Boise State logo turned SMU.

Peruna is not going anywhere. The new logo(s) are a supplement to our one and only logo: the running mustang. Many teams have a primary and secondary.

yeah - fine -

but the new logo is simply unoriginal, copy-kat-like & horrible look'n -

they obviously only provided a small group of generic 'modern' day 'corporate' logos to a very small focus group or groups /

why not dig into our rich history & bring back some of our very ORIGINAL winning logos???

To repeat from another post...then why is this "secondary" mark at the top of the masthead on the athletic website with no pony in sight except in the pictures that occasionally get put up and almost all of the apparel in the "lockerroom" are with this "secondary" mark?

Are you sure you were on the lockerroom site? At best only 10% of the merchandise has traditional logos/marks. Hardly a ton of stuff. The VAST majority of stuff is the "new" mark and mounted horse head.

Our intent is to keep our traditional Pony and compliment it with
another option. Basically we, like you, want to see more Pony gear around. I do
agree with you, however, that the very best way to promote our mark is by
winning in football and basketball.
