Once again how one could rate Romo's playing pitch and catch 60 times a game after being drummed by 40 points ahead of Eric Dickerson's TD record in his junior year which signaled the rebirth of an SMU dynasty is beyond me. Mike Romo is not one of the Top 30 QBs in SMU history.
I can understand your frustrations with some of the picks because they were while we were in the WAC, but come on Stallion, Romo broke a lot of the records while we were in the SWC with less than the best line for protection. Give him some respect...he earned it. As far as the ranking...everyone has their own opinion on that I am sure. Where is your list of the 90 greatest moments?
Stallion,
Romo was not one of the top 30 QBs in SMU history? I never understand your thinking. In fact, a while back for one of the moments you were very critical of the Pony Express teams because of the scandals, and now you try to take a stand for them. So not only are you stupid, you are a hypopcrite too. I say give Romo some respect. As a freshman he led a team full of freshman through the 3rd toughest schedule in the country. Not 3rd toughest in the SWC, but the 3rd toughest in the country. In his freshman and sophomore years he really was breaking records. Once again Stallion, you prove yourself a fool. Is this ranked too high? Probably. But Romo was a damn fine QB and I think that he earned this spot on the list.
Stallion,
Show some respect, he deserves it! He played with more heart than most (and he was not getting paid like the teams of the early 80's, he played for the love of the game). He played until his two knees just gave out. What does your resume show? Nothing but criticizing those who actually laid it on the line for the program. When have you ever strapped it on and stepped between those lines? Just b/c you disagree with a stupid ranking does not give you the right to degrade a player who gave it his best.
Man I really hate that crap. Do you really think that nobody is entitled to have an opinion about SMU football if they've never played college football themselves?
Regardless of the ranking Stallion can't have it both ways. In one breath he says the broken records don't mean anything because the competion was no good (the WAC) and then in the next breath comes out and says someone who broke records while playing against SWC teams is not worthy of the honor. That is just plain bullsh*t.
jt stang,
you misunderstood me, you are allowed to have an opinion, it just means alot less I just don't see the reason to degrade a guy's accomplishments who will probably have a hard time walking later in life due to the sacrifices he made on the field for SMU when it was just getting started from the death penalty. Disrespect Copeland all you want and other guys who have not laid it on the line, but don't disrespect guys like Mike Romo!
..what a pissy bunch of fools we have all become around here....we simply rag [deleted] [deleted] about everything..the sign of a bunch of losers, the signs of a program that is dead, done...I left this forum for awhile because a). i was getting caught up in the pissy [deleted] fool syndrome, and b). there was absolutely nothing to talk about..positive.....I have tried to come back, but, some things never change.....I will be THRILLED if this program rebounds, but quite honestly, I don't see it, and based on this forum of true FANS, your comments AND treatment of others shows me you REALLY don't beleive it either...long live Mike Richarson.
Don't misunderstand me: you are full of crap. My opinion is every bit as valid as yours and I haven't "strapped 'em on" since freshman year of high school. In fact, my opinion may be MORE valid than yours because I'm objective and not jaded by my allegience to my fellow football players. I've got no problems with Mike Romo, but I'll never begrudge anybody who does the opportunity to state them on this board becuse they never "strapped it on"--that's BS.
Romo & RiceMy memory of the Romo record (one of many that he set) was it was against Rice in a tight game (28-30 loss) and not a blowout. Rice was pretty good that year 5-6 and as always had a good defense. For those who remember (& some don't), 1988 was the year that Coach Gregg took the reins and he signed players for a 'practice' year. Personally, I thought Romo was a good player with more heart than talent, as were many of the first year players. The style of play, while 'gadget' was not uncommon for the time (see Houston Cougars) and was very exciting to watch. While I come from the Western PA school of three yards & a cloud of dust, the Run & Shoot was one way to go at the time.
