Starting QB and Recruiting

Postby Billy Joe » Thu Jul 14, 2005 11:39 am

I am a new poster on this board but a long time SMU fan. I have two questions some more familiar with the team may be able to answer:

1) Who will be the starting QB next year? All three QBs seem similar in skills. While Eckart is the best passer, Romo and Phillips can run better.

2) I have noticed most schools have already received many commitments for next year from high school recruits. How many does SMU have so far and how are they doing recruiting the local area, i.e., DISD, Highland Park, etc. since Bennett's focus is on those areas?

I appreciate any comments to my questions and I look forward to beating Baylor this season and entrance into the new C-USA. Go Mustangs!

they have ZERO commitments. Approximately 90 Texas High School players have committed so far. Start worrying even more if we don't get several commitments after the July 23 SMU camp.

that list is pretty dated. The new TexasFootball.com now has one of the better updated lists of current commitments.

Why has SMU not received any commitments yet from highschool recruits when many of the good players commit early? I thought "The Commitment" that was started a few years ago was going to make SMU more competitive in revenue sports, i.e., football. Does anyone have any insight into what is going on?

Yes, good players typically want to go to teams that win.

Yes. No one wants to be a part of a losing team...and that is what we have been for the most part since 1989.

Most of the players that are commiting so early are going to elite programs like Miami, SC, and UT. (Ut already has around 20 commits.) Schools like Rice, Sjstate, Memphis, and SMU have none. All the other schools have 1-3 players already commited.

More and more these days, the elite programs can afford to "squeeze" guys and get them to commit in order to fill their classes early. Programs like ours can only hope someone who is spurned by his program of choice will visit and then likes what he sees at SMU. The July 23rd camp is really important to kicking off a successful recruiting year, but winning more than 3 games is even more important if SMU is ever going to climb out of this mess we're in.
