The Tyler Daily Telegraph had a story about SMU football in the 8/18 sports page. Apart from the usual media information about the mustangs, Bennett was quoted as saying that his friends advised him against becoming the SMU coach; but that he was very much at peace about this year's season prospects. The article mentioned that the seniors were recruited by Bennett. The uncertain QB starter situation was cited too.
