From The Morning Line (Steve Davis) in today's DMN:
"Remember Josh McCown at SMU? He struggled to keep the splinters out of his heinie from Mike Cavan's bench.
Well, check out the kid now. McCown (who finished at Sam Houston State) filled in well for far-more-heralded Joey Harrington at last week's Senior Bowl. Once considered a possible late-rounder in the NFL draft, word is that McCown may have elevated himself to third- or fourth-round stock.
And don't you know that's a kick in the head to SMU fans."

I'm happy for Josh. He's a good guy who took a lot of heat at SMU. Congratulations to him.

Why would you say that is a kick in the head to SMU Fans? Are you a troll or something? I don't know of anyone who wishes Josh bad luck. The fans didn't bench Josh, Josh benched himself. You are a complete fool if you don't think David Page came in and did a better job last year. I saw the games. Josh did well at the D-AA level, and he did well at the senior bowl, with an all-American line in front. But, at the time, he needed to be pulled, 14 int's in about three games was too much. I still wish Josh all the success in the world. Now take your venom toward SMU Fans somewhere else. Have an o.k. day.

I think I've made a terrible mistake. Was that last line a quote also. I am So Sorry for that outbust at you. I read that last line as a comment from you. I have been known to be a complete idiot. Please except my apology, and I hope it never happens again. But this is not the first time I've heard this about the Fans. We are innocent. I was only taking up for the good Fans of SMU Football. Sorry for the idiot mistake.

It kinda bothers me how everyone (and by everyone, I mean the media) is all over Josh McCown, talking about what a great quarterback he was, and how Cavan screwed the pooch in running him off.
I remember the first time I saw him practice.
I said to myself, "Self, this kid is one hell of a player>" He has all the tools. Height, arm strength, mobility and speed.
I remember the first time I saw him play in a game, against Tulane in '98. We were down by 21 I think and he entered the game. Did some amazing things, and we got closer, only losing by ten or so.
Well as it turned out, the kids biggest problem was he went to pieces when the pressure was on. He would get so worked up in a huddle, he could not call the play. He got picked off more than chris simms in a big game. He had all the physical skills, and none of the mental ones. He wont be what people think in the NFL. I just hope the Texans don'y draft him. Conversely, I would love it if the cowboys or redskins drafted him.

Your comments are interesting. From your knowledge of what went on in the huddle, you must have played with McCown. Therefore, it seems that you are defending Cavan's yanking and indecision not just with McCown but in general at the QB position? Give us more insight please!

I was for certain not defending Cavan's indecision at the quarterback position. There is a popular saying that goes, "playing two quarterbacks is like not having one". I agree with the statement. It applied at Michigan and certainly applied at Texas, as well as at SMU.
Looking at your location, I see you are from Jacksonville, which means to me you are probably a friend or relative of Josh. That being said, I certainly did not mean to offend you, however I stand by what I said. I think he had all the physical tools, but what hurt him as a player was mental mistakes. Perhaps he has gotten over that, and if so, I am happy for him. He is a good guy and from what I have heard a man of GOd, which I respect. Again, it is still my opinion, that Josh's beiggest enemy was hisself at SMU.

call me a hater or whatever but I think Josh has a great arm and athletic body, but I really don't think he is ready for the NFL nor is he good enough. When the pressure is off he is decent. At the all star game he had a bunch of all americans blocking for him. At Sam Houston he did not have the competition that a D-I school has.
The QB position is mental and I think he has to greatly mature mentally and be able to face pressure.
I will agree, Cavan's time splitting was not to anyone's advantage and it greatly hurt Josh's performance.
