From the SMU athletic department:

DALLAS (SMU) --- Senior quarterback Tony Eckert hit nine-of-18 passes for 79 yards and one touchdown in the Mustangs' scrimmage at Gerald J. Ford Stadium on Saturday. Fellow signal caller, senior Jerad Romo, hit on six-of-eight throws for 67 yards on the evening. Junior receiver Reynaldo Pellerin made a one-handed grad on the Eckert scoring toss.

Sophomore running back Richuel Massey led in attempts from the backfield, rushing for 48 yards on 11 carries. Cedrick Dorsey, also a second-year rusher, averaged 11.3 yards by gaining 68 yards on six attempts. Dorsey had the longest play of the night with a 39-yard scamper down the right side of the field. Fred Turner added 16 yards on five carries and DeMyron Martin contributed 19 yards on five rushes.

Ryan Kennedy and Bobby Chase were the targets of choice with four catches each. Kennedy, a junior tight end, had 25 yards and Chase, a junior receiver, hauled in 36 yards worth of receptions. Sophomore Tony Hawkins made three grabs for 21 yards and junior Jay'Mond Cleveland had a pair of catches for 18 yards. Senior Chris Foster had the second longest reception, gaining 20 yards on his lone opportunity.

Kickers Ryan Mentzel and Brayden Harris also scored. Mentzel, a senior hit field goals of 40 and 18-yards while Harris, a freshman, nailed one from 30 yards out.

Yes, he did. But the way McMurtray is hitting the ball, there's little chance Mentzel will ever tee it up.

McMurtray did kick the 40 yard field goal and the 20 something one. It looked like Mentzel was going to be his backup but he missed his two and then they brought in Braden Harris and he made his. The press release was incorrect. GO SMU and beat the hell out of Baylor!

I know Mentzel made at least one. Or at least I think he did. Might have even been two. But you're right, Harris also got in there.

This just in: McMurtray is a freakin' stud. He hit one from 40 with TONS of distance to spare.

You know, Massey looked really good the other night. But was anyone else surprised to see that Dorsey averaged over 10 yards per carry?

It doesn't hurt to have two-three guys ready to kick field goals and punt. A pulled quad, a sprained ankle, broken nose, etc. could force another guy into action during a game at a critical juncture. I'll never forget Brian Barker's face (Redskin punter) after he tried to tackle someone on a punt return. His whole face looked smashed in. Needless to say, he was out and someone else had to punt the rest of the game.
