Varsity, Varsity
As she towers o'er the hill
Over there
And our hearts are filled with joy
SMU, SMU
Alma mater will be true
Forever
And ever

Beat the hell out of Baylor!

(This post is to commerate the fact that I finally made it off the JV squad with 250th post... didn't think I'd ever make it.)

Well, you almost got it right. You get credit for trying.

Okay... what'd did I miss?

I think it might be the "over there" line but, I learned it when I was ten... that's how I always sang it, and sang it the same way when I was in the band.

Also, knew Shanty from the same age...

That's why I posted meaningless drivel about a hundred times in the "Other Sports" board...

... just kidding...

Of course, fill in the "you mean this isn't meaningless drivel" jokes here.

Ha! That's like your kid asking you how to spell a word. Standard reply: "Look it up!"

I did... couldn't find the lyrics anywhere, even maixing out the use of quotation marks... of course, I have the old band's, history, traditions, and lyrics sheets folded up in my old wallet*. But I think that wallet is packed in a box somewhere....

*Even though I left the band my sophomore year, to focus on my films, I kept that stuff in my wallet (through two or three sifferent wallet changes)... all they up until six months ago - my most recent wallet upgrade.

Carried my beanie with me up until and through production of my first feature film. I'll get back to searching the net and SMU's website, and the Bands website, for the lyrics.

So Begermeister... what did I miss? (other than adding the never written but often sung final lyric?)

Do you still have your T-Shirt or are you just a pup that never had one?

I never had one... but I do have and old Mustang band tee-shirt that belonged to my older brother (nine years my senior... ten ahead at SMU)... and I also still have a tee shirt that I wore back when I was 12 - back in '90, that had the Pony logo on the front, and printing on the back that said, "My big brother's the Drum Major" ... Man, I loved that shirt.

You know when you're a kid you always think that the drum major is the coolest guy out there. He probably hangs with the team, on his down time. He and the quarterback hit the town on the weekends...

...of course that's simply not the case... but, you know, I wish it were...

I remember, well before that... back in the early 80's... the drum major was just as cool as Dickerson and James... I loved seeing the drum major running out on to the Texas Stadium field.

Ah yes.

I still have my freshman band T-shirt. It is tucked away in the bottom of a dresser drawer, sealed in a plastic bag. It still STINKS!!
