Non-BCS Top 10
1. Fresno State
2. Utah
3. New Mexico
4. UTEP
5. Toledo
6. Wyoming
7. Air Force
8. Bowling Green
9. North Texas
10. SMU

For one brief moment, the Ponies ride again
Remember, SMU? Wiped off the map 18 years ago by the first -- and still only -- NCAA death penalty in football.

Hold onto your cardigans, frat boys. SMU beat its first ranked team since 1986, 21-10 over TCU.

Hard to believe it's been 19 years, but it reminds us again that the Mustangs have never recovered from that NCAA death penalty in 1987. TCU had beaten SMU six straight times and was coming off an upset over Oklahoma.

That upset looks more worthless by the moment. TCU (1-1) was outplayed by a team that lost its opener to Baylor.

SMU coach Phil Bennett is now 7-30 at the school

Man, way to burst the collective bubble. Why don't you wait till the season's over to cast stones.

Hey, LF68... 50's Pony wasn't casting stones, he was quoting CBS SportsLine...

(Unless, of course, you were being facetious.)

If there really is such a thing as a non-BCS top 10, then SMU should be rated above UNT this year. After the aTm game, we might drop off the list.

I get the impression that number 10 is an honorary position. I am not familiar with this list but it does not seem to fit the CBS 119 list.

It seems like an analog to ESPN's bottom 10 #5. 8)

Then what's up with #9, since NTSU only beat a winless Middle Tennesee State by only 7.

It's not a true rankings list... it's a "Power Rankings" list... those type of lists mainly depend on what happened the prior week, but still bearing in mind the greater context of the season.

Like the NFL powe rankings. Any given week (except for the first one) there are teams with better records behind teams with worse on the power rankings, it's more of an expression/opinion of how good the team is right now.

Even with our loss to Baylor... should SMU pull the impossible at A&M, we will shoot up THIS list, whereas not even sniff a top 25 poll.

Well, since he provided no link I could only assume those were his words. So therefore, my comment is now directed at the author of the article. Yay.
