Now, I'm all about poking fun at the other team. But I feel nothing but pure arrogance seething out of ponyfans.com.
I'm really looking forward to this game, not to make fun of aggies or to shove our win in their collective faces. I'm in this to see how our Mustangs hold up. We lost against BAYLOR. And Jesus came down and pulled a win out of TCU. All I'm saying is that being confident is one thing. I am confident are guys are going to go down there and work their butts off. But this IS SMU football. DiamondM said it best because we should honestly all respect the Aggies and their traditions. We have some pretty nutty ones, too. It's just not many people know about them. Also, everyone I know from A&M is excited that we're playing. They're all ready for a good game. They're not gloating about it. So guys, keep your pony ears high, but try your best not to condescend. Rock AND Roll
Agreed, and I know I'm guilty of being a jerk to other fans. As much crap as I give the aggies, I do wish we had half the sense of tradition and spirit they do. At the very least, they understand how they can help create an intimidating home atmosphere.
We have one win under our belts, and we did lose to Baylor, so let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Having said that, BEAT aTm! We are all excited from the recent win, let's just build off of it to support our team rather than turn into the fans we hated when we got blown out. One last thing - get EVERYONE you know to the Tulane game, let's show our team that we can provide a good home atmosphere as well. Wear red and scream your heads off on defense. Also, don't bring new rally towels, they release dust and fuzz that irritate my eyes. ![]() From high on the hilltop, in Big D...
Normally I would agree but my gosh....they are Aggies. Live as long as I have and you will learn that there is a reason for all of the Aggie jokes beyond crass humor. This is an earned disrespect and position of being the butt of all jokes. Remember (and I was there) these are the people that pulled a sword on a cheerleader for setting foot on the field. And then to compound the idiocity, got flattened on his rear. You could not make up stories to complete with the stuff that comes out of College Station. And might I add, I love them for it because it always brightens my day to hear of the latest Aggie escapade.
I'm sorry Barbara Ann, but on this one I can't agree. First, we haven't played the Aggies in 8 years. Second, they dumped us to join the Big XII and refused to play us until R.C. Slowcum retired and we got an ex-Aggie as our coach. Third, their "traditions" are plain weird. We've made fun of the Aggies for 80 years, its not time to change our tradition of making fun of the Aggies. While I was at SMU, the most fun we had at a game was to mess up the Aggie band performing their traditional block "T" formation and then winning the game. There's history here and tradition. Our tradition has been and should always be to make fun of Aggies. They bring it on themselves.
This is a generation type thing. Making fun of Aggies is a Texas tradition for fans who grew up on Aggie Joke Books, Vol. 1-5. This is what college football at SMU used to be about-intense rivalries every week and the winner got to brag at the water cooler at work. On the other hand, SMU students weren't even alive the last time we beat A&M. And A&M has girls now and Aggies don't seem as pathetic as they were when we were growing up. Too bad they didn't have the internet back then. Of course, some people would rather play Texas Lutheran....
Just to make sure that my earlier post is not mischaracterized:
I've got no problem making fun of the Aggies. Don't like em, think they're over the top and goofy. My point was to make fun of them for the right things. Being loud football fans and knowing when to yell and when not to yell, knowing the words to your alma mater, etc. are just not the things we should make fun of them about because I would like SMU fans to be so football savvy and supportive. However, feel free to make fun of them for their love of farm animals and the like.
From a current Mustang Band member...I realize that like SMU, aTm has many traditions and I know that those who travel down there will respect them, especially those who are currently in the Mustang Band (I'm assuming). That doesn't mean we can't have a little fun by making Aggie jokes and doing other crazy stuff before, somewhat during, and after the game.
I really am looking forward to this game as it really is a test to see how well SMU's football team really is. As it was stated earlier, we lost to Baylor, but it was a pretty close game (28-23). That team has improved greatly since the last time we played them as have we. Maybe the Baylor game was a fluke and we really should have won it (I would almost argue that we would have had Coach Bennet left Romo in). I'm still excited that we beat TCU (hiss!!!), but in reality, they never should have been ranked in my opinion. OU was a different team than they were last year and TCU (hiss!!!) took advantage of it. This game could set the pace for the rest of the season if we beat aTm, but it will definitely give the players a chance to see that they can play hard and turn this schools history around. SMU will always have to live with the death penalty, but that doesn't mean our team will always be a bad team. Like my signiture says, all it takes is one time for something great to happen. Heck even Dale Hanson (probably still peeved about Peruna eating his Rolex) doesn't think we can win. I believe our players can win this game and upset the Aggies at home. I hope the fans believe this as well because I'm pretty sure the band believes it to be true. Sorry for a long and very first post. All it takes is one time for something great to happen...
Barbara Ann its not that they have spirit and know the words to their songs, its the way they do it. Grabbing your sac and crouching forward is just plain weird. Not knowing the words to the first verse of your fight song, but knowing the words to the second verse is kinda out there. Having your yell leaders in white jump suits (maybe the original ones were escapees from the nuthouse), standing on one leg and grabbing their ears seems, well, strange. Then there's the pseudo military corps stuff. I stopped playing soldier when I was about 10.
This is the best comment on the thread. But mrydel, your other comment was a little off. The corp turd (or any other) should NEVER have drawn his sword. But he didn't do it because the cheerleaders got on the field, it's because two mail cheerleaders tripped him to the ground, and as he was getting up all ticked he drew it out. Like I said, should NEVER have drawn it, those guys are a little too tight wound sometimes. Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 1995
Don't forget about the way they used to brainwash freshman into climbing up that bonfire, and how they still wanted to continue that "tradition" after the accident.
That is wrong. It happened right in front of me. The SMU cheerleaders went on the field to form the SMU letters with their bodies as they always did after TDs. The cadet came charging at the cheerleader and drew his sword. The cheerleader gave him what is known in football language as a 2 handed shiver (opened palmed hands with extended arms to the shoulders of the oncomer). The cadet flew backwards about 5 feet, landed on his rear and slid on the wet turf about another 10ft. It was priceless and hard to believe, but like I said, I saw it right in front of me. It was subsequently explained that the reason for the action, although not justified in any way, was due to the fact that the Corp does not allow anyone on the field except the team the yell leaders and the band. This idiot was in charge of protecting that from occuring.
