I saw that post earlier and laughed my [deleted] off. Thank God for the Rice Band. OK I just realized that many Pony Lites may not know the story of the riot and death threats that ensued after the Rice Band known as the MOB saluted Reville by marching into the formation of a Fire Hydrant. Easily the greatest halftime spoof of another school in the history of college Football. Band Bus had to be escorted from the stadium by armed guards after a band of Aggies threatened to beat them up. Of course, any aggie will tell you they win their OWN awards for sportsmanship every year.
When the MOB first went in to the Block T Formation that day, I thought I would wet myself. Before I made the switch to SMU and graduated from there, I was a Rice fan in junior high and saw probably the funniest half time ever. The MOB spoofed everyone in the conference that year. Only the cultists couldn't handle it
"Your announcer is Bill Melton."
Do you guys remember the Nite the Rice MOB spoofed SMU's band as "The Best Dressed Band in the Land". All 100 or so members of the Rice Band were dressed in some of the most colorful, outlandish costumes that one might see at Mardi Gras. No Riots or physical threats were reported. But the MOB got a standing ovation.
Stallion,
I think they refer to that as their "MOST Dressed Band in the Land" show. Funny stuff. There's also a funny story where they had a band day and dressed up all the kids to look like MOB members. So at halftime, like 400 people come single filing out of the tunnel, probably took forever, and I think it may have been a play on UT having one of the biggest bands at the time. Last year they did a pretty good show, a Gilligan's Island theme, with the SWC "castaways" left behind on the island by the new Big 12 schools. Was it any wonder, SMU was "the millionaire"? From high on the hilltop, in Big D...
mobI recall the MOB presenting a halftime show following the aggie/sword/cheerleader game..."A tribute to cheerleaders"...they formed a giant sword that marched down on some over-developed and over-dressed cheer-folk...hilarious...
for all the folks in their late forties...BEAT aTm stable-boy for the four horsemen of the apocalypse
I recall the MOB doing a tribute to Alcoholism at one SMU game. I think that was also the game that they marched onto the field, forgetting that Peruna runs across the field at the end of the half. He ran right through the middle of the band, clarinets, saxaphones a-flyin'.
And Stallion the other half of the story with the MOB and the Aggies was that Reville died that summer and they kept him on ice all summer so he could have a proper Aggie funeral (whatever that is and not that there's anything wrong with that). So when the MOB marched out goosestepping backwards onto the field and assembled in the fire hydrant formation, they played "oh where oh where has my little dog gone" and had a guy out in front of the formation with one of those quivvering dog collars without a dog. That's when the Aggies lost it. Truly funny stuff.
Re: Additional cult evidence
Kinda scary, huh!
That is awesome! I'd never heard that story. Rice is the only former SWC school for which I've never had any animosity -- the idea that the smart kids who go to Rice are just boring engineers is proved inaccurate by pranks like this. This is absolutely hilarious. I'm a Pony, and I'm a PonyFan!
