Texas Tech petitions NCAA

This from Greensboro (idle hands are a terrible thing for a pony fan.)

Mike Leach, Head football coach at Texas Tech University, petitioned the NCAA last week to make wholesale changes in the Red Raiders 2006 football schedule. Leach is proposing a special waiver that will enable Tech to drop Texas A&M, Texas, Baylor and SMU from next year's campaign and replace them with McMurry, Sul Ross State, Hardin Simmons and UT Arlington. Leach announced the request before a hastily scheduled press conference yesterday in Lubbock.
"Our offense has been strong for a number of years, yet we have been unable to completely re-write every offensive statistical record in Division 1 due to the challenges of playing a full Big 12 schedule. Is it unfair to give us the opportunity to leave a more indelible image historically by a few more "gimme" games?"

Members of the assembled press were quick to point out a few puzzling facets of the request. In particular, that UTA had not fielded a football team since the early 80's and had no plans to do so. In addition, SMU and Baylor had hardly given Texas Tech fits in recent years.

"Well, we hope that by scheduling UTA with a home and home series, it will get the ball rolling for them to bring back their proud football program. It also gives us visibility in a large market for our alumni and of course recruiting. In the interim, if they don't field a team it will simply go down as a forfeit and another W for us"

"Regarding Baylor and SMU, though those are games we would most assuredly win, the margin of victory and offensive records might not be as great as in the past. I mean, c'mon. Baylor is 3 and 0 and SMU beat TCU. Although after SMU's performance last week against A&M, we might want SMU back."

Leach was jovial when asked about adding three non Division One teams that in some cases don't even provide scholarships for their players. "I'm really excited about the Dynamic duo of Hardin Simmons and McMurry that are both located in Abilene. It's a natural fit for us geographically and saves on our travel budgets."

Leach became belligerent when asked why not just drop Oklahoma or Oklahoma State? "Are you kidding? Oklahoma and State suck now and you can quote me on that. Besides, we checked and Schreiner College and Jarvis Christian weren't available.

Leach ended the press conference abruptly when asked how Tech could
mathematically still win their division playing 3 fewer conference games than their division brethren. "It's like my offense. It's just too complicated for y'all to understand."
