Hire

So, do we hire:

1) A Div-1a Coordinator (see Phil Bennett, no HC experience)
2) A Div-1aa Head Coach (see Mike Cavan, 1 6-5 winning seasons in 4 years at ETSU, then a 10-3 record - which is really 9-2 then 1-1 in playoffs)
3) An area HS HC that might be able to get some recruits here

All of you guys holding out for some BIG NAME head coach can forget it, unless Lou Holtz wants to come out of retirement and bring some NCAA scandals our way.

If I am mistaken, please - put a small short list of those would be interested coaches here...

No coaches will be interested in this job, this job is a coaching graveyard.

Let me preface this by saying do NOT hire this guy.

However, I can tell you someone who will apply. Always winds up with a job even though his mediocrity precedes him.

That is...

Gerry DiNardo.

Again, do NOT hire this guy. But he will apply.

smu needs to quit buying the expensive brick for all of the new buildings and put it in an account called "the deion sanders fund." $10 million later, we get deion.

Posting names just gives Jim ideas to cross off his list. I therefore advise Pete Carrol of USC.

Butch Davis is probably going to be the next Arkansas coach if Nutt gets fired this year.

I still haven't heard a name with the resume of Gary Gibbs who we might actually have a shot at.

Actually this just jumped into my thoughts. Maybe it's too early to start thinking replacements.

However, read Coach B's words in the DMN today.

Then apply them to my short list appearing below. Ask if any of these folks would be associated with such remarks. AD: remember, it's my short list. Feel free to use it.

Jimbo Fisher
Terry Bowden
Rick Neuheisel
Houston Nutt
Bob Toledo

I don't think these guys would wind up in such a situation. Anyway, I promise not to ramble about whom I think the new head man should be before we are in need of a new head man. So long as no one considers Gerry DiNardo.

I tried to start a head coaching thread several weeks ago and you guys were saying it was premature. Are you now are realizing that this team plays with no heart or passion and the coach is to blame. The coach is not the only problem as we have a moron AD and moron policies in place but why would I waste my Saturdays to watch the same old crap. The next hire better be someone with proven Division 1-A success as a head coach which means you have to open up your wallet SMU...you cheap jerks.

The money hasn't been printed yet that would get somebody in that category to come to SMU, where coaches wither on the vine and die. The horse left the barn years ago on SMU football (no pun intended probably), and it will never recover, no matter who's at the helm. The reason is we hvae sucked so bad for so long that nobody, not even those in your category, will get qualtiy players to come here. We have th reputation of losers, and will keep it until some unproven coach can take our unwanted players and make winners of them. History suggests that is an impossible task.

That is flat out wrong. I agree a new coach would be hesitant under the current model, but change the model and….New AD, New Coach, Real Commitment….see the money start flowing again.

JT, even I am surprised sometimes by your negativity. Dallas and SMU have a lot to offer.

Well, that was me. And the team went out and beat TCU the next week. We all looked like A-holes. We are 1-3. We weren't favored in any game and we looked like crap in every loss. We thought we had a chance in two of them and looked lethargic and confused. We were pretty sure we'd get stomped in one game and were only made to look more foolish than we could have imagined going in. Still, I thought we'd be 0-4 and everybody else did, too. And we are 1-3.

I have a list, too. It is longer than any list I have seen. I am just saving it in draft form for a week or two (three tops).

What is the hurry? Bennett is the coach through at least the Rice game. And what does it matter? The same Cleaveland Browns lineman is in charge last time I looked. I have an AD list, too. But those names are harder to come by.
