NEW COACH AND AD

Postby drummer » Tue Sep 27, 2005 9:50 pm

I AM A LONG TIME SMU FAN BUT I AM TIRED OF LOSING.
THEIR IS A FORMER FOOTBALL COACH THAT LIVES IN THE
METROPLEX BY THE NAME OF GENE STALLINGS.HE IS AN ICON
OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL THAT COULD STILL TURN ANY PROGRAM
AROUND.I THINK HE WAS INTERESTED IN THE BAYLOR JOB BUT THEY WOULD NOT GIVE HIM FULL CONTROL AND HE SAID NO THANKS.
THIS WAS A FEW YEARS AGO BUT HE COULD VERY WELL HIRE AN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR AND GROOM HIM FOR HEAD COACH IN
A COUPLE OF YEARS.TODD DODGE MIGHT A GOOD FIT-LET ME KNOW YORUR THHOUGHTS ON THE SUBJECT.

Anything is better than the current situation. I would like to see a new AD with new ideas and engery brought to the whole athletic program. Copeland must go. Replace Copeland and I believe there will be a sense of renewed hope. After all, hope is the only thing SMU fans have had for the last ten years.

I like your idea.....but isn't Gene Stallings in his 70's?

I heard they are thinking about Gary Gibbs the former OU Sooners Head Coach, who currently is in Dallas working for the Dallas Cowboys.

Gibbs would be a nice safe "not rock the boat" kind of guy the "control freaks" would feel assured would "behave".

Hey Gibbs wouldn't be my first choice but we could sure do alot worse than Gary Gibbs.

Gibbs had a much better career in Hollywood than at OU.

I always liked him as Caretaker in the Longest Yard

But his classic performances were in F Troop. (Now that's dating me.)

Gibbs led to Schnellenberger and Blake. NO thank you. Word was that Gibbs didn't believe in conditioning.

No ideas on AD or coach, but that one doesn't good. If he couldn;t win w/ all of OU's resources, how in the world would he do better here?

Great Point. If he can't win at OU - how in the F is he going to win at SMU

If Stallings isn't interested we might consider Hayden Fry.

re: Hayden Fry - Gene Stallings

Good heavens guys, Hayden Fry and Gene Stalling are practically ready for the nursing home!

We need someone not already in their seventies to begin a new era at SMU.

Gibbs did win at OU-44-23 65% - he didn't win BIG at OU because OU was placed on a 3 Year NCAA probation and lost serious scholarships under Switzer's clock-I forgot the number. OU was not a great job in that situation-so if you are going to come on here and talk generalities please trying to distinguish your head from your [deleted]. Gibbs has coordinated some of the most athletic defenses in College Football History-don't know where you are getting these comments about conditioning. Its amazing with that reputation that he has been a Defensive Coordinator with 3 of the Top 10 Programs in America and LB Coach with the Dallas Cowboys.

Not true. Such jobs are hard to get. There are a handful of assistants (Stoops) that turn down jobs because of lack of prestige, but by and large, we would have a lot of options. Whether we have done a good job of evaluating those options is another matter. But we do have to be looking for a coach looking to move up and at the moment we are at the bottom of D-IA, so that means an assistant or a lower division coach unless we offer a ridiculous amount of money.

Look at the other coaches in the various sports we have interviewed, many eventually got another offer, but they did show interest in SMU, even in basketball where there are a million D1 jobs.

Also, you forget the inherent ego required for the position. Every coach naturally believes they can acheive anything.

considering the fact that Bennett got turned down for about 5 Head Coaching Jobs before SMU and yet everybody on here thought he was a "hot" prospect shows that whoever we get will be a "hot" prospect according to the masses no matter what. SMU will not get a true "hot" prospect-if there are 10 jobs open next year we will be tenth in line for "hot" prospects-we are going to have to dig a little deeper.
