Alot people always say "aw he would never come here".
But could money convince some big name coach to come to SMU that would otherwise decline an offer from SMU?

Everyone has a price, but you would have to spend 2 to 3 times Bennett's salary for any big name to even consider the position at this point.

Good luck with that - SMU's budget is not very big plus I think they are still paying Dement's salary.

No. No "big name coach" would come here for any amount of money.

Just about everyone has a price. But it's a matter of being confident that the money spent would be justified by the end result. That's where the guessing game comes in.

I agree I don't think we can afford a proven coach. SMU is going to have to find a coach trying to make a comeback of some kind or roll the dice with either a Division 1-AA Coach or Division 1A Coordinator.

SMU has become a job known as a coach killer. A name coach (Bowden, Stoops, Beamer, Franchione, Brown, Meyer) would not give up their gigs to come to SMU even for twice the dough they're making now (which is substantial). Perhaps an ex-NFL head coach might look our way or we might talk someone out of retirement for a swan song. But a current division 1-A quality head coach, no way.

Funny, you just described, in one way or another, every coach we have had since 1987.
Gregg--comeback
Rossley--D1 coordinator
Cavan--D1AA Coach
Bennett--D1 coordinator
What's the definition of insanity again?

I don't think there is any way in hell SMU gets Neuheisel-not against it-just don't think that would fly. At least with a Neuheisal or a Gibbs(who also may not be interested) you get proven Divsion 1A BCS caliber coaches who have taken their teams to multiple bowl games have been recognized as among the best coordinators in the business as assistants. Neither will be a head coach in training. At the very least I prefer this type of option-please no more Cavans or Bennetts who don't have head coaching experience.

actually Cavan had head coaching experience...just not at the I-A level. He took E Tenn St to a #6 ranking in I-AA and I think we were all pretty pleased with what we saw his 1st year at SMU

one of these days you guys are going to wake up & realize that the coaching position is not smu's problem -
one of these days!!!
until then, you're wasting that one little brain cell that bouncing around in your empty lynchmob minds!

You mentioned ex-NFL coach. [deleted] Butkus is doing that reality gig on ESPN coaching a PA high school team. Is that a step higher than coming to SMU, if the price were right?

If you think some players don't like Bennett's tough attitude how would they react to Butkus? Jeez. One guy if he's still alive that had some ties to SMU and would be a great coach would be Bum Phillips. Now that's an ex-NFL coach I would love to have.

I know the fans have lost faith in Bennett's abilty to make the right decision at the right time. Players have to feel the same way. How could they not? If they doubt their coach then I don't see any way out of it but a change.
Sure we would all like to see a change at AD but from what I can tell that's not going to happen for awhile and until it does the other things that need changing are on hold.
