When we hire our next SMU AD it must be a bold "once in a lifetime" choice.

We can't afford a mistake.

This new AD needs to be an extremely talented individual that can "make things happen".

This AD needs to be a great speaker, "a mover and a shaker", a born leader, and person that won't take "no" for an answer, a person that can get things done and has the track record to prove they get things done in their past.

If we pick someone "out of the box" the new AD could stay for say 5 years just to get things turned around and then return to their empire outside of SMU.

But at least we would get someone dynamic that gets the ball rolling, that can handle the opposition and obstacles that are holding SMU back from reaching it's real potential in athletics and national recognition.

With the above said, I here-by nominate Mr. Roy Bailey to be our next AD at SMU.

Roy Bailey an SMU Alum is extremely successful at raising money/capital which is a big part of an athletic directors job. Roy Bailey is an out-going warm personality that could help "sell SMU". Being the head of several leading corporations Roy Bailey would be up to the challenge to overcome the people and entities that are currently holding SMU back from success on the football field and basketball court. Some may say "Roy wouldnt do it", "Roy is too involved in his business", but if we all approached Roy and said "SMU NEEDS YOU", I bet he would do it for a few years, because he loves SMU.

I don't mean to belittle Roy but I think SMU needs someone with experience. This is a crucial hire (aren't they all?). There is some fireball out there who would love this job. I guarantee it.

We need somebody to tell the eggheads on the faculty advisory board to get bent. We need somebody that will have the backing of the alumni that can make that statement. 3 wins a year is not acceptable and it should not be our goal either. Once this challenge is thrown down, money will be the next big issue. Money for new degree programs, money for a new coach and a real staff, money for a new BBall arena, and the list goes on.

The AD is a job that needs to find a leader that can bring in big money and support. An SMU alum that can do that is a much better choice than an assistant AD from Vandy who has no connection to the school, alumni, or Dallas. It is not like this person is going to call plays. He is going to hire coaches but I am sure a search committee that is qualified in that area would be able to cover any areas that are lacking.

Roy Bailey would be an interesting candidate, he has an aura about him.

I am not going to hire the most principled, ethical, motivated and successful businessman in the world to fix my car and I am not going to hire him to fix this athletic department either. I am going to hire somebody that I think actually knows how a athletic department should be run and let him fix it.

I want somebody that knows business not an ex athlete that knows socks and jocks. That is what the assitant ADs are for. You need a leader with real business skills. This is a business and needs to be run like one.

No doubt, Bailey can tell you it is broke (hell, I can do that), but he can't tell you how to fix it.

Like I said, we need to think "out of the box" and not settle for someone "because they have experience".

Hell Jim Copeland "has experience"!

We need to make up alot of ground and you do that by making bold moves.

Moves like when Jerry Jones hired Jimmy Johnson,
remember all the "these guys have no NFL experience,
they dont know what they are doing, how can they
fire Tom Landry". Blah blah.

So dont be surprised when you see responses like
"we need someone with experience".

It's no surprise most people want to play things safe and
are afraid to think out of the box.

Let's see, Jones fired his last coach whom he hired, and his outside the box thinking was to hire let's see, the Tuna. Dan Snyder thought outside the box and fired Marty Schottenheimer and hired Steve Spurrier. That really worked out well. Bob Hitch figured the way to compete with Texas, TCU, and A&M was to outspend them in hiring players. That really worked out well for SMU. Now, I like Roy and his passion for SMU. But I don't know if he'd like signing a million NCAA reports and trying to get sponsors for girls rowing events.

I'm not a Cowboys fan because of Jones so the whole Jerry Jones thing eludes me. Since Jones ushered in the salary cap I'm not even an NFL fan anymore. Hardly ever watch even part of a game. I don't know who the players are since they move around so much.

If we are going for a businessman I nominate Bill Gates. Will somebody get him on the horn. Even though he is a college dropout he seems like a pretty good businessman.

What about Lance Mcilhenny although as vice president of commercial real estate for The Staubach Co., he probably makes too much $$$.

Considering the state of commercial real estate over the past 4 years, I don't know if many VP's have made crazy money at Staubach or anywhere else for that matter. Well, there are a few people at Staubach who do ridiculously well regardless of the market...

What other owner of all the other current NFL Owners has

Besides New England the list gets pretty short.

Say what you will about Jerry Jones, he may be a jerk,
he may be tightwad, he may be alot of things,
but he is one of the most successful owners in NFL History.

How can anyone deny his decisions, his money, his ownership

To each his own, if you want to do everything by the book fine,

I doubt it, but he sees it as part of his job.

Just like successful people like Roy Bailey may not enjoy
every single aspect of their current job, but talented people
deal with it.

Hey I think it is a great idea to look at people like Roy Bailey and others
that have not been in athletic departments their entire adult life.
