FRANKFURT Galaxy head coach Doug Graber believes the playing standard for the 2002 NFL Europe League season will be at an all-time high.

Graber heaped praise on those heading to Europe this spring after a record 257 NFL players - including 17 quarterbacks - were allocated to the NFL Europe League earlier this week.

The second-year head coach said: "We have a record number of NFL players coming to NFL Europe this year and that will provide the highest quality of football ever played in Europe.

"I think all six teams are balanced on a very high level and we have some very talented players on the Frankfurt Galaxy roster."

For Graber and his coaching staff, this week's NFL allocation and free agent draft was the culmination of months of planning and preparation. With just kickers, punters and national players to be added to his team, Graber will now turn his attention to preseason training camp, which kicks off in Tampa Bay, Florida, on March 6.

"For the past two months, my coaching staff and I have talked to all the NFL teams and most of the players that have been allocated to the Galaxy," Graber said. "These players were eager to come to Frankfurt due to what they have heard about the Galaxy.

"All the Galaxy players who made NFL rosters this year had tremendously positive things to say about the city of Frankfurt, the Galaxy organisation, the facilities, and the staff. The allocated players are very excited about coming to Frankfurt this year."

One player heading to Frankfurt who is likely to provide a lot of excitement for Galaxy fans is Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Joe Hamilton.

Hamilton is an exciting prospect who was college football's top quarterback while at Georgia Tech in 1999. Hamilton finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting to current New York Giants star running back Ron Dayne. He has spent the past two seasons as the third quarterback in Tampa Bay.

Providing depth at the quarterback position is the strong-armed Chris Sanders, who has been allocated to the Galaxy by the Atlanta Falcons.

Sanders, who was born in Germany, played college football at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, where he set school records with 7,230 passing yards, 49 touchdowns and 12 300-yard games.

Graber said: "I'm happy about both the quarterbacks allocated to Frankfurt. They are intense competitors, both are very intelligent and both have good arms."

Sanders is excited about heading to Frankfurt and hopes to form a successful partnership with Hamilton.

"This is a great opportunity to go overseas and play football," he said. "Also, I was born in Nuremberg, not too far from Frankfurt. I've been there before, I like the city of Frankfurt and I'm looking forward to the challenge of going there to play football.

"I grew up watching Joe Hamilton and he has fantastic abilities. I think we'll make a great combination and we will be able to help the team a lot because we're different types of quarterbacks. This will make us a huge threat for opponents because it will be hard for them to prepare."
