I'm sure that firing both of them will make you feel better, but unless there are other changes made, three years from now you will be asking the same question. When both of these men have functioned with two hands tied behind their proverbial backs what makes you think someone else will do a better job? We have now had four post DP coaches, all of whom have had legitimate success elsewhere. Forrest Gregg - Super Bowl coach for the perennial doormat Cincinnati Bengals, Hall of Fame lineman, SMU graduate. Tom Rossley- SEC offensive coordinator experience, NFL OC experience including Green Bay. Mike Cavan - I-AA championship coach and former Georgia Assistant. Coach Bennett Defensive coordinator for National Championship contender and Big XII champion- Kansas State. They all have not succeeded here. So, yeah fire everyone and then watch us continue to fail and blame the coaches. I think Stallion has really got this one right. I think that if we don't win at least 2 more games, Bennett will probably go, because he is not getting in the same doors he got into his first two years, and he realizes, that things could get ugly real fast. The sad fact is that next year we could start out very well. A good game against Tech, then Ark. State, UNT, and Sam Houston, and we could be 3-1, going into conference play.

Congrats on posting the first sunshine of the 2006 season! The sad fact is we will more likely lose badly to Tech, lose handily to UNT, and lose to at least one of the d-1aa schools. I have no expectations of winning any of those games, but I will be pleasantly surprised if we do.

Ark St is Div 1. That is my only correction at this time.

The problem with your dissertation ES is that Copeland is the AD, not a coach, and in that position of leadership he should be more candid and focal about the problems that exist here. He should be an instrument for change.

Instead with are left with Jim Copeland, and listening to him, you’d think everything is hunky-dory.

Don't you get it. His job is: (1) to blow smoke up our you know what's to keep $$$ flowing in; (2) deal with scheduling issues in order to try and get as many fans in the stands; (3) ensuring the dictates of the Board of Trustees are carried out in the athletic department. His job is not to "shake things up", and whoever they would hire to take his place, will NOT have that in his or her job description either and if that person tried to rock the boat, that person would be on his or her rear very fast.

EastStang,

Are you sure his job description is not to run a marginal program into the ground without any hope of winning while stealing a paycheck from the university and not being held accountable- because that is what he has done.

Y'all should listen to ES, he's talking sense. I'm not saying JC doesn't deserve the door. But if you're expecting things to change for the better around here with just a new AD and coach, prepare to be very disappointed.

Thanks Knuckle, that's all I'm saying.

That's great. Let's just keep JC and give PB another contract extension for 12 more years and continue to blame this ambiguous, abstract concept we call "the administration" for the next 16 years for the failures of SMU Football. Why don't we just start referring to it as "the dark side of the force."

The main problem with "the administration" is that it apparently doesn't recognize the power of winning at revenue-generating sports to increase school spirit, attract new students and drum up alumni support. If it did, it would hire an AD who would stop at nothing to succeed (see my previous posts) and a QUALITY head FB coach who can both recruit AND coach!!

But the administration didn't cause LaDanian Tomlinson or Tye Gunn to go to TCU instead of SMU. Can anyone honestly prove that if LT or Tye Gunn wanted to come to SMU instead of TCU, that SMU wouldn't have let them in?

The administration didn't cause the team to take a bunch of valium before walking out on the field against Tulane. The administration didn't cause 10K fans to show up at the game on Saturday. "But it's the policies of the administration... " What policies? Grow up. Sure we need a new "commitment", but it starts with getting the right people into the athletic department.

ES,

We historically vie against Buffalo, Temple, Kent State and Vanderbilt for the title of worst football team in the nation. 3 of those schools have BB success that we can only dream of. So I feel pretty confident in saying SMU has THE WORST combined FB/BB program in the nation. When you consider all our assets, this is a remarkable statement.

Copeland has presided over this disaster. He has shown zero leadership or vision. You cavalierly say he blows smoke and does scheduling (neither of which he does that well)….did you see the ECU game? That joke of a crowd is the byproduct of his regime and was totally predicted by many on this board. I actually told Turner to expect this while Ford Stadium was being constructed.

A real leader would have told the truth to the Board in such a way as to not jeopardize his job. A real visionary would have told Gerald Ford to spend his money on a state-of-the-art basketball arena instead of football.

An AD should be a leader. Copeland is no leader. He is a failure in my books.

I hate to keep having to ask the same obvious question...BUT...who exactly is going to get the right people into the athletic department? The abstract concept we call "the administration" ?

I think we all agree that something has to be done, but how the hell do we get it done...how do we get any of it done?

well defended

its the restrictions, not the coaches
