My message to the players

To the SMU football players:

As you can tell from the activity on the message board, many fans have given up on this year. Don't let this get into your heads. You are the people than can cause immediate results. Not Bennett. Not Copeland. Not the Administration.

I want you to know that the fans and supporters of SMU realize the time and committment you guys put forward each and every week. And we all want you to win, not just for our enjoyment, but for yours also. We get a great feeling when you win, and I am sure that feeling is even greater for you.

So keep up the hard work. Put forth your best effort. And bring home the win over Tulsa. We ARE with you.

Thank you for all you do.

Good post. I agree that if players read this board, they might get the wrong message.

I think it is easy for some to confuse support for the players with support for the administration or coaching. Kind of how people confuse suporting the soldiers and supporting the war. Although, I support both.

This is an important distinction and I hope our players realize it.

I remember these type posts - on mustangmaniacs.com - at the end of the Cavan administration.

I am sure the players try their hardest, and good for them. But if they cannot handle the observation by fans that their best simply does not lead to consistent winning on the D-1A level, and the resulting frustration with the lack thereof, then frankly that's just too bad.

Blow it out your shorts, jt. I was just wanting the players to realize that we appreciate their efforts and for them to continue to work for what we all want.

Sometimes a good pat on the back will do wonders.

Diamond M,
You are not alone in your support of the players. Sometimes it's easier to be critical.

Look, I am not critical of the players, I DO think they ar giving it their all, like you do. I also know that their all has resulted in 5 wins in the last three seasons. Now I know there's more to play this year, so I'm wishing for the possibility of improvement on that record.

Again, please pay attention to this part: I DO NOT believe the record is because of a lack of effort or heart or guts on the players' part--it's just old fashioned being outmanned for the most part.

OK that's better. I just got the feeling you were being critical of the players and that is something I just can not tollerate when they work sooooooo hard to improve. This team is much much better than in years past. We have only seen one blow out this year. We have been in every game for the whole game, except one. We have beaten teams that we were not suppose to even play with. I just want to get to the next rung on the ladder and maybe, just maybe, a little player support will provide the push we need.

No problem, anything I can do to help clear the lines of communication. But if the players really do come to this site, then they need to understand I am not going to stop voicing my disappointment over the results, should the trend of predominent losing continue. If that bothers them, then they should look elswhere for feedback.

That sort of takes the wind out of the "Blame Coach Bennett" sails.

For what it's worth, I'm packing up for a trip to Tulsa.

GO MUSTANGS!
