running the ball

Postby drummer » Sat Oct 22, 2005 6:03 pm

How can we have a hard nose running back like Martin and not give him
the ball down on the goal line where he can use his ability to hammer out a yard .Instead we go into the shotgun where it is much harder to throw with a short field. Is our offensive line that bad or is this just another bad
coaching blunder?

it is really disappointing to see Martin be such an exciting runner when he gets to his third stride and yet we always run him out of this Punch and Judy formation where he is only a few steps from the line and always running to one side or the other. We are wasting his potential because he is not the cat-quick type of runner that you usually see in these offenses-see Tauren Henderson. Line him up 8 yards deep add in McKinney and see what happens especially in 4 down territory and especially against Tulsa.

Exactly.

Instead, we line up 4Q on their two (after marching finally from our own 16) on second down & pass into the flat?!?
Then, we burn a TO todecide to run that great deep handoff to Martin from the Spread for a loss.

GENIUS!!!!!!!

I would love to respond and say something positive but time won't permitt. My Stros are in the World Series and I have a nice spot on the couch awaiting me.

I'll be at the Rice and UTEP games. It's a yin and yang kind of thing. Finishing 2-9 or 3-8 is about right for this team. Maybe we can hit 4-7 next year. I'm not turning into a Sunshiner but with our schedule next season I think it could be realistic. The again another 3-8 is also a possiblity. Just hedging my bets.

Go Stros

I just had a funny thought come into mind. Suppose we had Earl Campbell in the backfield or even Eric Dickerson. Would we run Earl in this type of Punch and Judy running formation? I suggest its just as idiotic to run Martin in these offensive formations. Now that I think of it Campbell would ride the bench in this [deleted] offense or perhaps we'd have him run the inside reverse one play a game. I'm sorry this just really bothers me to see a potentially great running back wasted like this.

I hate it. Every time they get close to the goalline, it seems they try some tricked up offensive play that never works. Whatever happened to running it up the middle?
