Division 1-A football coaches may want to take a look at Tulane game films. Because the school has been shut down since Hurricane Katrina, it's projected the university will lose $200 million this school year. Don't be surprised if the football program gets cut, meaning all Tulane players are eligible to transfer and play immediately next season. Some Tulane coaches have given a heads up to other coaches in the business that this will likely happen.

Losing Tulane would be a srious blow to CUSA. If this happens, look for La Tech to take their place.

I agree with Sam I Am that LA Tech would likely be first-in-line to replace Tulane if the Green Wave ceased playing football. I hope that Tulane has a long gridiron future.

Before the hurricane/flooding Tulane was hoping to someday build a G.J. Ford-like stadium near their campus and leave the Superdome except for home games against programs like LSU (TU and LSU begin a ten-year series next season).

Reports that I read said that the Garden District (TU's home) and the French Quarter weren't too badly damaged. Tulane is suffering because overall city services and infrastructure are still slightly/partially/fully dysfunctional depending on the department, area, etc. Of course, a number of faculty/students/staff are away from N.O. and the campus is presently closed.

TU will face ongoing challenges on many fronts - student and faculty recruitment and retention, research project continuity, budgetary problems and loss of institutional momentum.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most schools allowing Tulane students to go to their schools FOR FREE so that Tulane can keep their tuition money? I'm sure they're still losing money, it would be interesting to see if they had some sort of interruption insurance.

Yes and no. My understanding is that Tulane still is collecting tuition, because the classes these students are taking count toward credit at Tulane, not at LaTech, A&M, Washington University, Northwestern, etc. I don't know if the students are paying room and board at the other universities.

I would assume that Tulane is heavily insured, but whether the insurance is enough to cover all of the devastation that has hit that campus remains to be seen -- the repair and renovation bills are going to be astronomical. In fact, I've heard speculation that there is significant uncertainty about whether the university itself will survive. I think we all hope it will. Tulane is a wonderful school, and a great place to live. (Not as good as SMU, of course but pretty nice, nonetheless.) I would think that the athletic department, or at least football, would be very difficult to maintain once the students get back on campus (what was it -- two years ago that the university tried to abandon football altogether?) I'm just speculating, but I'd bet the Tulane higher-ups would see other things as higher financial priorities.

Corso - I am not doubting your information, but where did you read/learn about "all of the devestation that has hit that (TU) campus...the repair and renovation bills are going to be astronomical"?

Tulane connected people have told me that while buildings and grounds were damaged, the campus wasn't "devestated" and that the overall breakdown of the Cresent City is Tulane's foremost problem (in addition to getting the campus/university running again).

Numerous small, medium and large size problems can combine to create one humongous problem. Tulane is definately being tested.

This would suck. The very best thing about SMU getting invited to C-USA was the prospect of getting to go to New Orleans every other year.

Sorry, but Balfort alone was just awarded two weeks ago a $150 million reconstruction contract at Tulane and they are not the lead contractor. This will be huge. Insurance is covering a big chunk, but not all.
