The real shame is, there will be virtually no one in the stands when he is honored. I would wish when guys like this go out, they would announce it at the beginning of the year when there are folks in the stands and honor them in front of some people. Let him do a victory tour, so to speak.

Well done fella. Hope you have as long, enjoyable retirement.

Wouldn't that require a victory?

On an even more trivial note, Cash Birdwell was (not sure if still is) a Garland ISD board member and my HS diploma has his autograph on it. Anybody know if he still holds that prestigious position?

Cash is one of the greatest people I've had the pleasure of meeting at SMU. He will be sorely missed around The Hilltop.

I wish I had known him better. Eddie Lane was our trainer but took a year off to be a trainer at the 68 Olympics and Cash filled in. I was too low on the totem pole at the time to get any trainer attention for hurts.

No, he's not. Here's a link to the Garland ISD showing current school board members.

Isn't Cash in some kind of athletic trainers' hall of fame somewhere?

I knew him a little bit when I was in school -- he's one of the most loyal Mustangs I ever met, and it's really cool to see him get some pub like this, pub that he so richly deserves.

Agreed.
Any news on the suggestion of naming the training room after him? That's a no-brainer. He's the living definition of what it means to be a Mustang.
