"I still think we can finish this season positive. I think the kids are still into what we're doing and that's important." -- SMU coach Phil Bennett, whose team is assured of its eighth consecutive losing season.

You don't think winning down the stretch would be positive?
I'd think that would give the players some optimism and enthusiasmm, don't you?

Positive is a relative term, I suppose.
At this point, I'd donate $1000 to the Mustang Club if they go 5-6. But, I'm sad to say, I honestly don't think there is a chance ANYTHING positive could come from this season now. We'll be lucky if we beat Rice and go 3-8.

If we lose to Rice, DiamondM75 will go into major solar eclipse mode.
If we win out, look for sunny days.
If we win 2, then partly cloudy skies.

Since the TCU game, from what I have seen (in the stadium) and listened to (on the Ticket), the only way we can avoid a 9-loss season is if a game is cancelled. If our players are giving 100% then maybe they haven't been taught what to do. We're not very good.

Like last year? Lot of good that did.

At this point 4-7 would be positive and would match what many had predicted. Less than I predicted.
An upset of Houston or UTEP would give some bounce to the program.
3-8 is a let down.
2-9 is a disaster.
The offense has so far not achieved what had been expected and is the biggest on-going issue but we clearly have more skill there.

(than in recent years)

A coach has to be a coach and has to act and speak accordingly. Like every coach in america, Bennett has a lot of confidence and believes he can coach this team. Unlike us, Bennett can't simply give up on this team and it isn't like a win affects our draft position or anything. We can [deleted]; until notified otherwise, he still has to coach.

Last year we defeated 3 teams, SJS, Nevada and Tulsa, who had a combined 11-24 record.
Between SJS, Nevada and Tulsa’s 11 victories last season; 3 came against non-1-A opponents, 3 came from those teams playing each other and 3 came against Rice.
So personally I didn’t place much importance in any of our victories last year or in defeating Rice this season.

Okay, but he was talking about the importance placed on those wins by the players in terms of optimism and enthusiasm, which did not translate to any additional wins this year.

Oh, well in that case, SMU football is horrid and I predict continue horridness into the foreseeable future.

What's your point, SoCal?
This year's wins come against TCU & UAB. They combine for 10-5 record.
We've defeated better teams in '05 than last year. You don't like that?
Now, you want to dismiss the possible win against Rice-- who beat us last year.
Huh?

Does it matter than TCU & UAB are 10-5? Our team has 2 wins this year and has another guaranteed losing season!!!! Meanwhile, TCU has rebounded from their fluke loss to us and are ranked in the top 25...again and will be headed to another bowl game. The only bowl that our team is involved in, is the toilet bowl that Bennett can't get the program out of!!!

SWC,
You are missing my point.
I placed little significance in our victories last year against 3 lousy teams, just like I would not read too much this year in a victory over Rice.
TCU and UAB are different stories.
