Lending credence to the notion that pride comes before a fall, TCU jumped to No. 22 in the country and was promptly dumped 21-10 by former archrival SMU, a team that has lost 125 of its last 177 games.

"It taught us a lesson," Patterson said. "It brought us back to earth and made our kids understand that at any time anybody can beat you. . . . Fortunately, we had a Thursday night game (against Utah), so we didn't have long to think about it. But I'm not sure we would have the chemistry and the fortitude we have now if it wasn't for that loss. Obviously, when I sit around and think about it during the holidays or when the bowl season's over, I'm sure I'll wish it hadn't happened. But, right now, it's all about moving forward."
