Since we are the most Title IX compliant program in the country with impressive graduation rates, this NCAA progam that's on the table right now should answer are financial woes. We are the perfect poster child!

or...

Maybe this is the NCAA's version of the "participation" trophy...

Either way, this is the type of "Win" President Turner is looking for SMU.

NCAA proposes classroom incentive program - Associated Press
*************************************************************

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA wants to create a $10 million annual incentive package for schools with student-athletes that consistently excel or demonstrate significant improvement in the classroom.

The announcement was made Thursday after the NCAA's executive committee and board of directors met in Indianapolis. The proposal is expected to be discussed again in January or April when the committees are scheduled to meet again, and NCAA President Myles Brand said it would likely take a couple of years before any money was dispersed.

The current proposal calls for $2 million going to schools that consistently excel academically, $5 million for schools that show sustained improvement and $3 million for schools that struggle academically but demonstrate an inability to fund some programs.

The money is expected to come from the NCAA's contract with CBS to televise men's basketball, which executive committee chairman Walter Harrison said is scheduled to increase by about $40 million annually.

Schools could be rewarded with $100,000 payouts but the NCAA has not yet announced what standards will be used to determine which schools will receive the money.

The committees also endorsed the NCAA's decision to ban certain American Indian mascots, images or nicknames during postseason competition.

Harrison acknowledged there has been controversy surrounding the issue although he believes much of the criticism is because the public has misunderstood the decision to implement the ban only during postseason competition.

So let me get this straight:

Schools at which academics always have been a priority -- Stanford, Northwestern, etc. -- gets $2 million.

Schools that show improvement -- meaning they previously had not held up their obligation to make academics their top priority -- get $5 million.

And the Schools that are really weak academically -- get rewarded with more money than the schools that make their students work in the classroom?

Was this thought up by the same geniuses who came up with the B(C)S?

Good concept, skeptical about the execution. Just watch as all the money goes to Tennessee or Alabama for improving grad rates from 10% to 25% or something equally ridiculous.

Exactly! Idiotic people coming up with idiotic concepts to help the idiots! We just seem to be on the losing side all the time.

Meanwhile, Northwestern and Vanderbilt will continue losing out to their conference bretheren because they screw up by making their students reach four digits on an SAT score, and by making them go to class once they enroll.
You can't get ahead if you let actual classwork get in the way of football, huh?
