Ticket Ad today..Cowboy Game Comment:
"Arizona plays the Cowboys this Sunday with quarterback Josh McCown who couldn't make it at SMU but is starting for the Cardinals"....thought that was a funny comment. I know this has been rehashed many times, what was the real story there? He got run off, transferred on his own?
Combination of many issues.
Josh obviously possesses the physical tools worthy of playing on the most elite of playing fields. Unfortunately, his inability to put it all together while at SMU killed. It was a solid mixture of failing to feel confident and secure in his spot, develop into the system he was playing under, not being surrounded by Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin types, and ultimately, never putting a string of consistency together. After his last game here, when TCU beat them pretty soundly, he was told after the game Kelan Luker would be the starter going into the spring. He transferred about 2 minutes later, as anyone should have with that news. I think it worked out nicely for him in the end, but it was a bit irrational at the time.
McCown was not the first Div. 1-A QB to transfer to Sam Houston State, dubbed by some as Quarterback U., despite what some folks think.
Chris Chaloupka (Oklahoma State) started the trend, followed by McCown then Dustin Long (Texas A&M), Noah Allen (Univ. of Oklahoma) and Phillip Daugherty (Texas Tech).
I call TOTAL [deleted]!. McCown had won the job back after his two game benching-which he deserved. This is an excuse probably by his brother or cousin or uncle since I note the guy lives in Tempe why McCown tucked tailed and ran because he didn't think he could beat out a trombone player. This never happened-it has never even been reported-in fact the exact opposite has been reported that McCown would be given every opportunity to win the job in the spring but he would face competition from a trombone player in the spring. It doesn't even make sense since ALL players get looks in the spring-rarely does one player get all the snaps at any position in the spring. This is revisionist history. He is a QUITTER who ran out on his teammates because he wanted to become the Greatest Player in Sam Houston St. History and get his degree from a junior college.
Cavan did everything in his power to make McCown the SMU QB. Gave him every opportunity. Cavan ended up losing his job because of McCown's horrrendous play. He couldn't play a lick. He will be out of the NFL in 2 years. Potential only goes so far. He has the size, arm strength and athletic ability but he is not a football player. Plain and simple. Only the Cardinals would have put up with him this long.
McCown bores me. Let's talk about Charlie Waters or Chuck Long. Bennett did get the job over Chuck Long. Looks pretty smart doesn't it.
For a bunch of 'rejects' they've had more post season appearances in the past 5 years than SMU has had since returning from the DP. You'll get a chance to see 'Reject U' next season since they're on SMU's schedule.
I'll see what I can do to have him at Ford next season when Sam Houston plays SMU. ![]()
Stallion, because you washed jocks or submitted press releases while at SMU does not in any way qualify you as in insider. I watch you post and ridicule anyone on here, but all I can disgustingly imagine is an old, miserable, bitter, wrinkled man clinging onto recruiting information and the days of old when you begged for an Eric Dickerson or Michael Carter to thank you for whatever improper benefit you were desperately willing to give, whether it was running their errands or writing their papers.
On a personal level, Josh and I had little to nothing in common. We all loved him as a teammate, but we also knew he didn't need to be a starting quarterback. To a man, there was complete shock when he was drafted in the third round. But what he does with his opportunity ultimately describes who and what he is. I can respect that, and it isnt sucking up whatsoever. I have absolutely nothing to gain by telling the truth about Josh. Ask any player in the locker room that dreadful evening and you can hear the truth. The job became Luker's to lose because he was redshirted that season to "learn to see the field" without being in the middle of it. I highly doubt rivals.com or whatever other connection you have to insider information will report this. I'm not coming to a website full of incorrect assumptions, half-truths, and "insider" knowledge to prove anything. Josh's reason for leaving was simple. His performance did not warrant him any job security. For three years he failed to nail down the job for Cavan and it was evident the next year was going to be exactly the same. He had a lifelong goal of getting a shot in the NFL, and he knew it wouldn't become a reality, AT ALL, had he stayed and endured another season of being in the wrong offense for him. At the time of his departure, and I don't know if this made your insider reports, it was mutual for everyone involved that Josh should leave for his best chance to succeed. Subsequently, the job was HANDED to Luker who was outperformed all spring and summer by David Page, but Cavan's most fateful decision was sticking to Luker because in all of his years, he had failed to name a qb going into a season. Luker started the first four or five games that next year, and when he was finally benched for Page, Cavan had sealed his fate. It is all for nothing now, but call Larry Kueck or Johnny Ringo and ask how the decision was made for the starter that year. Better yet, be on the team and watch the competition for the job, see Page outperform by a longshot, only to see Luker keep the position, struggle early on and another SMU season lost by October. That single decision led to Cavan's firing. Nonetheless, Stallion, you're handsdown the largest dooshbag I've ever come across. It took me 20 minutes to type this, but in no way is your sorry [deleted] worth that time. I often respect and agree with your posts, but on this one, please don't respond. Your credibility decreases each time.
Not to sound like .... well, like Stallion when someone disagrees with anything he sees on rivals .... but Stallion, even you know that not everything that happens gets reported. If it did, you'd have to give credence to stories reported in media outlets other than rivals.com .... but we know that's not going to happen. More often than not, you bring a lot of logic with your posts. This is not one of them.
I'm not surprised you are one of McCown 's suck up buddies-it has obviously prejudiced your opinion, but that doesn't change the fact that you totally made this [deleted] up. This is a total fabrication!!!!!! No one was HANDED the job! McCown had NEVER earned the starting job because of poor play. There was nothing to keep him from winning the job in the spring. Nothing. Poor little Josh McCown didn't have any JOB SECURITY? What a bunch of crap! He was awful in most games he played in. He QUIT because he didn't think he could beat out a 6-0 trombone player!!! The job became Luker's because he had been REDSHIRTED? What kind of thinking is that? EVERY freshman is being groomed to be the starter someday and to compete for playing time every year. Cavan and everyone associated with the team wanted McCown to succeed but when you turn it over 8 times in two games it is perfectly acceptable to sit the kid down for a game or two and see if someone else can do the job. The guy litterally handed the other team about 4-5 TDs with his mistakes. Even then despite the first victory in about 7 games with Page at QB-Cavan went back to McCown and he started the last two games. He is a Quitter who put this program in a very difficult spot and it makes me want to puke to see people like you parade him around like some kind of hero.
To be fair, neither you nor I know whether McCown thought he couldn't beat out Luker, or whether he thought he wouldn't be given a fair chance to earn the job. There are many coaches (see Bill Parcells last year and his relationship with Vinny Testaverde that made him so hesitant to look at Drew Henson and Tony Romo) who are thought to have "their guys" -- favorites who always will get the first look and the benefit of the doubt from the coach. I've never talked to McCown about this, and I'd bet my mortgage that you haven't either. I don't consider myself a McCown apologist (I'm more of a Flanigan guy, truth be told.) But to call McCown a quitter seems unfair, at best. The fact is that none of us knows HIS reason for leaving. And whether that reason was based in fact is moot, because it's ancient history.
So .... what are the keys to beating Rice?
HE was the DAMN STARTING QB!!! What the hell are you talking about comparing him to Henson or Romo? He WAS Cavan's QB and started almost every game of his career. Nobody was switching his position or changing the offense to wishbone. He QUIT for personal reasons-he let his team down. He is no Mustang! He is a proud graduate of Sam Houston State Monument Junior College.
