Mustangs vs. Ponies

My opinion is it's Mustangs to everyone who is not on our side....and Ponies to us if we want to use it as a term of endearment.
It did drive me crazy, and sounded sophomoric at that, when during the pregame vs. Tulsa they announced that it was the Tulsa "Golden Hurricane" vs. the "SMU Ponies." I don't think I once heard Mustangs.

Posted: Mon Oct 31, 2005 10:44 pmI second that about Ponies being a term of endearment...most schools are like that though - there is the official "name" or mascot, and then the school "family" has other nicknames that they use as familiar. I think "Mustangs" are more fierce - but I find myself yelling for the "Ponies" in the stands on gamedays...
Besides, look at Peruna - could anybody in all honesty call him a "mustang?" He sure looks like a pony to me...although I hear from the Pony Handlers that he has quite a temper and stubborn personality, nice and fiesty!

Posted: Tue Nov 01, 2005 9:17 amWe use both. I would add to that list Crimson Tide vs. the Red Elephants (Alabama's true nickname). As for TCU, I have always called them the Horned Toads. I've never seen a Horned Frog, I never hope to see one, but I can tell you right now, I'd rather see one, than be one.
Posted: Tue Nov 01, 2005 10:30 amOur fight song is 'Pony Battle.' The loyalty song mentions both Mustangs and Ponies, but ponies is mentioned only when the band does the chant. The band plays a song called 'Dial M' and spell out Mustangs a couple times along with 'fight, Mustangs, fight.' It just depends. 'Ponies' seems to be a term of endearment. I've noticed when we are playing well, 'ponies' is yelled, whereas when we're not doing so well, it's 'mustangs.'
