Why I won't be at the Rice game

Postby RGV Pony » Mon Oct 31, 2005 9:45 pm

...I'm following through on a promise to take my 15-year old stepson to a Notre Dame home game. Every year we do one more thing on 'the list,' which includes a Duke home bball game next year.

I'm starting early trying to keep myself from asking questions like, "now...how many ND alumni are there compared to SMU..." and, "so what are the admission standards up here...," and, "hmmm..South Bend, IN...or Dallas..." I need to keep telling myself that ND's fball program and SMU's program are apples & oranges.

I will, of course, be hitting "refresh" on the play-by-play stats & summary on my phone. What a nice trip home it would be knowing SMU won.

It will be quite an experience. Make sure you get there for the pep rally Friday night as well that's held in the arena. That is a pretty good time as well, but you have to line up early to get a good seat. I went up there in 99 and plan on going again next year. Have a good time.

Who needs Touchdown Jesus when you've got the Ponies winning (albeit through your cell phone)?
Have a great trip. We'll pick up a win for you on this end.

My wife and I went up to South Bend to check that off our list a couple of weeks ago.

Didn't think we'd have a chance of getting in.

Alum walked up and sold us two tickets for $70 each to the USC game. What a perfect day.

Good luck to you. :D

This goes to the heart of 70 years of SMU athletics. What did ND do to become the private school that many in America love, while SMU has never achieved that distinction? (1) Until recently, ND always had a blue collar quality to it (2) Immigrant Catholics (especially in Chicago) adopted the school as their own. (3) Notre Dame has never been touched to any degree by NCAA scandel. (4) ND has a built in recruiting tool in every Catholic high school in America. SMU on the other hand is a school which is part of a relatively small religious denomination which has not been discriminated against since the 17th Century. SMU has been a school which has many of Texas' most privileged attend. We have lots of NCAA scandels. The Methodists have not been as aggressive as the Catholics in creating secondary schools. These facts and perceptions may be why we've never gotten traction with the average Joe Sixpack.

I won't be there because I will be coaching the last Fall baseball game of the year for my son's baseball team. I will be getting score updates as the game goes along. Wish the games were night games since we do have lights at the stadium.
