If we lose to Rice....

Postby Sam I Am » Wed Nov 02, 2005 12:45 pm

Is it negative to mention the unthinkable? A loss to winless Rice would be a disaster! Could it happen? I sure hope not. I doubt that this board could stand the revulsion that would swarm over ponyland after another loss to the Owls. Sorry to bring up such a depressive prospect, but our record with Rice indicates that anything could happen, and I don't even want to go there. Where's my Prozac?

Sure it could happen. Rice hung with UTEP, which means the Owls certainly have the talent to hang with us, or even beat us.
But it's not going to happen.

i got a bad bad feeling for saturdays game. i think the game will be close till the fourth, we'll give up turnovers, rice will win the game by 2 touchdowns becuase they WANT to win the game. we'll be fired up the first ten minutes then sleep walk thru the last quarter.

p.s. the spread is very generous at SMU -8

That is up. It opened at 7; yesterday it was 7.5.

when is the last time SMU won a game, we were favored to win? being favored seems to be a curse, just like our opponents having a loooooooong losing streak, before they visit very friendly Ford Stadium.

Glad your happy with 8 wins in 3 1/2 years under our current coach. Or that we have had one winning season since 1989. How many games have you seen in your time being associated with SMU?

My worst fears may come true, eh

Postby Sam I Am » Wed Nov 02, 2005 11:23 pm

Just as I suspected, there are others who recognize that there are no cinch wins for SMU these days. I truly don't know if we will win or lose, and that is very telling isn't it. All I do know is that a loss will be devastating.

SMU will win this game unless we turn the ball over a ton.

We have three opponents in common with Rice. We played UAB, Tulsa and ECU tough. They got spanked by all three.

Looking forward to the Houston game, the teams in common are that we lost to Tulane and Tulsa, they beat both, spanking Tulane. That is gong to be tough.

UTEP killed Tulane and Marshall, we lost to both, that is going to be tough.

I expect that we will be able to beat Rice, then will be cometitive in the Houston and UTEP games but lose both.

By every measure imagineable, SMU should win this game. However, Bennett's defense is 0-4 against this offense. To date, Rice's schedule has been significantly tougher and faced significantly better offenses. I won't be counting any chickens before they are hatched.

If we lose to Rice, rightly or wrongly, Bennett will seal his fate!

This is a "must win" for Coach Phil to retain his job.

If we lose to Rice, I will fly down for the Houston game and personally heckle Phil the entire game until he either cries or comes after me in the stands.

I will also be taking donations to buy radio time on The Ticket begging for the university to fire Phil and Copeland and actually give a da*n about the pathetic state of athletics at SMU.

I recall like yesterday going to Oklahoma in 1971 to play the Sooners. They had an All American running back in their wishbone (Pruitt I believe). We spent the entire week stressting spreading the play out to the sideline. Our DEs on the snap would sprint to the outside in order to contain. Pruitt merely cut up after starting outside and had a field day, and we lost 30 zip and it was not that close. If you spread it wide you had better have someone to fill the middle. The key is to stop the fullback first with defensive line and then the LBs can support from inside out while the DEs keep contain. Easliy said, difficult to do. If the LBs are needed to stop the middle then it will be a long day of QBs and RBs starting wide and cutting up the field.

what a miserable day that was! Rainy and cold. That was the short debut of Hayden Fry's "Flying Wishbone" which was about 25 years ahead of its time but Fry was up to something. The Legendary OU backfield was QB Jack Mildren, HB Pruit, HB Joe Wylie and FB Leon Crosswhite. It ended 30-0 if I remember correctly.
