Has anyone taken a look at the article out there now regarding dwindling ticket sales fan support? This quote amazes me, is Copeland really going to be satisfied with this?

"I have very seldom put a whole lot on any one game, and I'm not doing it this year," athletic director Jim Copeland said Wednesday. "Not winning consistently bothers me. We have to get over the hump and win consistently where we win five or six games every year."

So he would be happy with just over or just under .500 every year, that is one of the worst quotes I have ever seen from an AD.

So we have gone from competing for championships which Bennett said when he arrived, to striving for 5-6 wins a year? I understand that would be a great improvement over our current situation, but I sure hope that the head of our athletic department has bigger aspirations for our football team than that.

It would be easy to challenge Copeland for saying five or six wins a year, but I won't. SMU is so far away from that that I can't blame him. SMU has to get to five or six wins a year before it can get to eight or nine. Still, the goal ain't five or six, Copeland. The goal is championships.

I agree -- if that's all that's needed to keep the school administrators, that's a shame. But I don't get the sense that's the ultimate goal, 5 or 6 wins. Considering where we've been since 1989, I'd be thrilled if we win 5 or 6 games ... this year (although I expected improvement, but feared a record similar to last year), or next year. If we can develop a trend of hovering around .500, then we aim higher. It's just about taking baby steps. If we were to go from 3 wins last year to a goal of 9 this year, we're setting up for disappointment. If we aim for 5 or 6 wins next year, that's more realistic. Let's get to that level and then worry about how to take the next step.

The reason SMU only wins 3 games in a good year is that the Goal is to only win 5 or 6 games. That says it all!

We won FIVE games when Copeland fired Rossley. Then we won FOUR games the season Cavan was fired. I'm not sure what this means, I just know I don't feel good about it.

I'm glad someone noticed his UNACCEPTABLE goals  Maybe he should go back to Virginia and see how acceptable those goals would be at his old alma mater :!:

It has been obvious for a very long time that SMU is willing to accept losing. They have the same expecctations as JT.

I'll be there and am actually bringing along 3 others. Unbelievable but they are mainly coming to see the alumni band. They really couldn't care less about the final score and I'm sure none of them could tell you SMU's current record. They know we are bad but that's about it. That's the kind of fan SMU should shoot for--the I-couldn't-care -less-fan. They long ago abandoned the I-want-to-win-fan but neglectted to tell anyone. They didn't really have to since their actions have screamed it.

Prediction: SMU will win but no one will care.
