Sturdivant wins C-USA honor
Defender honored as Player of the Week
Nov. 7, 2005

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU junior safety Joe Sturdivant has been named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced today.

Sturdivant, a native of Lilburn, Ga., had a game-high 10 stops, two pass break-ups, an interception, a fumble recovery and a tackle-for-loss in a 27-7 win over Rice. He anchored an SMU defense that limited the Owls to just 230 yards of offense in the Mayors' Cup-clinching win.

The win is Sturdivant's second of the season. He also won following SMU's win at UAB. He is the only defensive player in the league to win the honor multiple times in 2005. He joins fellow Mustang safety Jamey Harper as a defensive winner this season.

Sturdivant leads C-USA in passes defended and ranks third in tackles.

that's pretty stout to be so high in both tackles and passes defended. I had a feeling Sturdivant was exactly the type that would help us finally shutdown the wishbone.

Could not happen to a better guy.
Those of you who have met Joe will agree with that. Those of you who haven't need to go out of your way to meet him. He's as classy a guy as you'll ever meet.
Congratulations, Joe!

What classy quotes in the Dallas Morning News!! I can not remember exactly what Joe said but basically stating the coaches had a good game plan to stop Rice and the players executed their plan.

Really a good guy and desrving of 1st team All -CUSA.

Definitely not a negative to Sturdivant, but Haywood, in my opinion was far and away the defensive star. Congratulations to Joe.

Personally, I agree with you -- Haywood simply dominated the line of scrimmage. But I think they both should be first-team all-CUSA.
