My first-hand observations/thoughts of this weekend's events

- We made it from Austin to Dallas in right at 3 hours. Thank gawd most people heading our way stopped off in Waco.
- The Boulevard seemed more populated this time than in my previous visits. The people I was fortunate enough to meet and talk to were all very nice and generally people seemed pretty happy to be there.
- I can't tell you how many people we talked to who were there enjoying the festivities but were not going to the game. I think is unfortunate. I cannot fathom one event without the other. It seems odd that you would come out for the tailgate and not go to the game. But hey, that's just me.
- The "scenery" throughout the Boulevard was spectacular. It's a really beautiful um, campus.
- I was surprised at how much UT paraphernalia I saw. Not making anything of it, just surprised to see it.
- I impressed to discover how many people who were there were actually graduates of other schools, yet they were there supporting the Mustangs (myself included).
- The Mustang Pom Squad is lovely. Enough said.
Ok, now to game stuff.
- The team looked bigger than in past years. They didn't seem to be pushed around in the trenches as badly as I have seen in the past. This, imho, is one of the bigger improvements over past years. It looks like the Mustangs are starting recruit the right players for particular positions, not just skilled ones.
- The speed positions looked faster than in past years as well. Also, the DB's didn't look like midgets compared to their offensive counterparts. Again, looks like the recruiting is working in that respect.
- DeMyron Martin is a badass. I like him a lot. All of the backs, in fact, looked very solid. It looks like any one of them is capable to carry the load if called upon.
- Jared Romo looked solid, but he's still more of a scrappy player than a truly talented quarterback. He reminds me most of Major Applewhite from UT, except that he doesn't have bionic knees. He's good, but I doubt he'll see a snap in the NFL.
- I was truly disappointed I didn't get to see my favorite player play - Chris Phillips.
- The defense looked good against Rice's rushing attack. They had the shutout well in-hand, but I think they finally got warn down. However, only giving up 7 to the same team that put up 40+ on them in the previous year says a lot.
- The crowd was non-existent. It was hard to get too excited about the game when you could hear a cricket chirp in the stadium.
- No offense, but every time I heard "3rd Down Thunder" I threw up a little in my mouth. That has to go.
- I was bummed I didn't get to see the MOB. They didn't play at the Texas/Rice game either. Guess I'll have to make my way down to Houston... wait, that'll never happen.
- Every time I visit, I am always impressed by Ford and it's facilities. I forget that it's such a nice stadium. Too bad no one is there to enjoy it. Seriously, someone has to come up with something clever to generate interest. Hell, give tickets away... something.
- I wish Texas would schedule a home and home (or a home-home and home) with SMU. It would be a lot fun to watch Texas play in that beautiful stadium and I can guarantee the Texas faithful would help sell it out.
- I am officially 2-1 at Ford. Heh.
- I was disappointed to see how few people tailgated after the game. I don't know if it's a Texas-only thing, but after the game, win or lose, people return to their tailgate spots and continue the festivities. I thought I would see some of that after the game, but pretty much everyone was gone when I walked out of Ford.
Anyway, I had a great time and wish the Mustangs the best of luck for the rest of the season. I enjoyed meeting the few of you that I had the good fortune to meet. Hope to meet some more of you next time I visit (hopefully the UTEP game, but I'm not sure about that yet).
