That's It. Its Time For Me To Resurface

What's up.

Some of you may remember me from a few years back. I used to post on this site reguarly as a freshman and a little as a sophomore, but for the better part of two years I've been lurking around this board. I am so angry and furious over my four years here at so many levels, but let me focus specifically on the athletic team performance and student body personality.

Obviously, a majority of the people on this site who post regularly graduated from SMU. As a senior now about to embark on life as an SMU graduate, I've been able to look back on my years here and I've tried to formulate the best summation of what took place here. First of all, the money generating sports at SMU are rediculously laughable. I've never seen a school mismanage resources or personnel more than SMU football/basketball. The marked lack of talent to compete at the Div.1-A level is appauling. Realistically, I think everyone on this board should take a nice reality pill and realize that within ten to fifteen years, SMU football with either be Div. 1-AA or completely nonexistent. This is not to say efforts weren't made by the university and those in charge to fix the situation, but their efforts failed tremendously. Then, to compound this problem, the people responsible for making these errors were not held accountable. No one can defend Phil Bennett or Jim Copeland with a straight face. There is no excuse for the product they are attempting to sell to students/alums/potential fans. There that rant is over...now for the students of SMU.

Coming in to SMU I was aware of the perception that SMU was a bunch of suburbanite snobby brats. Despite being a country boy from East Texas who grew up in a town of roughly 600 people, I was eager to prove this stereotype wrong. Well, three years later I'm here to say that stereotype is alive at well at SMU. The majority of students here honestly make me sick. Not only are they totally oblivous to the world outside of their Beamers and Land Rovers, they condescendingly look down on anyone who isn't from their socio-economic class with complete disdain. And don't get me started on their support of the football team. Not only do they not attend the games, the ones that do usually know NOTHING about football!! I guess when you attend boarding schools where lacrosse and chess are the sports of choice then your a little in the dark when you see American Football! But seriously these kids are a total joke. I attended every home game my first two years at SMU, and after that rediculous way of spending my Saturdays, I swore to never attend an SMU sporting event for the rest of my life. I choose not to support a school of debutantes and skinny snotnosed suburbanites or a team or school that has neither the brains or the balls to hold people accountable for their total failures. Wow...that's the best you can come up with? Now, think about what you just typed. An SMU degree ain't exactly that hard dude. I'm a senior double majoring in Political Science and History and I've made the Dean's List every semester here. Was it difficult? Not really. Is SMU a better school academically than UT, A&M, Rice, or even Baylor? No. Its a country club university. Don't trick yourself into believing that SMU is some beacon of academia.

well everything you said about the athletic program is true-as for the rest- just what socio-economic level are you from?

I do not blame you one bit. SMU athletics was not the student's friend during your tenure.

To answer your question Stallion, I'm from a middle class family. My dad is a retired rancher and my mom is a kindergarten teacher. We don't have Highland Park money but we do ok. I'm certainly not in the upper income bracket for the average SMU student. That aside, I've learned a great deal about the real world here at SMU. Obviously growing up in rural East Texas things are much different back home than here. Its been a real experience I'll put it that way. I just have trouble supporting a school that's infested with its own false sense of superiority b/c of mommy and daddy's paycheck. And believe me that is the perception of SMU wherever you go.

im a first year at SMU and im in engineering, it's hard as hell, but i love everything about this school. as for football, i live life as an optimist and from what i have seen this year compared to last year, I look forward to watchin the next three years of smu athletics, and just hopefully, hopefully, the mustangs can take a national title in something...Men's Soccer 06 or 07 champs, u heard it here first.

I can do grammar smack too. "Your" a winner???? Keep up the good work. And to respond to the socio-economic stuff in your rant, I think that pretty well sums up the student body. The problem of course is that you can choose to let it bother you, or you can make some life-long friends with those rich and pampered kids who grow up to be either very successful in business or raise children and live off a trust fund. Either way, those friendships can be very good to you for the rest of your life. In other words you chose to go to SMU, and those kids are the majority of students at SMU, so deal with it. Further, the socio-economic manners that you learn at SMU can make life much easier down the road.
