The Grove & The Boulevard

Going back to Oxford this weekend to see Ole Miss take on Arkansas - it'll be my first trip back since I graduated from Ole Miss a year and a half ago.

I'll be on the lookout in the Grove for ideas to bring back to the Boulevard. The Grove was the source of Turner's inspiration for the Boulevard, and they know how to tailgate right at Ole Miss. After all, the school colors are the same, and so are the type of people at both schools.

Its a shame these 2 schools don't play more non-conference games, the last time they did, SMU game the Rebels a run for their money! I know all you Mustang fans would love to road trip to Oxford, its a classic college town, and I know Mississippians love to come to Dallas and shop.

Ugh, how can we forget. I remember the walk away from the Cotton Bowl being very long after that game.

Ole Miss had fumbled seven times, losing four of them, and let an interception get returned for a touchdown. The Rebels were down by 22 points Saturday and knew the score was no fluke.

But with 9:45 seconds left, they didn't give up.

Mississippi got a 3-yard touchdown run from Joe Gunn, a 92-yard punt return by Corey Peterson and a 44-yard touchdown pass from Romaro Miller to Grant Heard with 31 seconds left to force overtime.

In the extra period, Deuce McAllister scored on a 4-yard run for an incredible 48-41 victory over Southern Methodist.

Took the road trip to Oxford several years ago--as much as I love the 'vard, the Grove is awesome.

Same type of people at Ole [deleted] / SMU?????? What? I think it takes the exact same requirements to go to OlePiss as it does to be a NYC cab driver, as Jerry Sienfeld says, "all you need is a face". My lovely wife writes sorority recs for a TON of girls out of Memphis going down to Oxford..we are COMPLETELY amazed at a constant theme....2.6, 2.9, 2.2, 2.0 GPA's...18, 19, 17, maybe a 20 every now and then on the ACT, predominance of cheerleaders, pom pom gilrs, real heady stuff, true leadership material...if the OlePiss / SMU comparison involves cocktail parties, I might buy the comparison, but after that, SMU is miles and miles above and beyond little old Ole Miss. We are still trying to understand the Ole Miss "attitude", surely not based on academics, football, prestige..I think most of them still think it is 1963.

Ah yes, the infamous game in which Dan Freiburger announced "and the rout is on!" (I was unable to attend the game, hence the radio memory/flashback.) As I recall, Ol' Dan was awfully silent in the postgame show. Who was the play-by-play guy then -- Walter Lynn? Mark Followill? Whoever it was did the postgame show basically as a solo act.

Ole Miss and SMU are pretty similar in terms of student body makeup.

Very Greek, Very Southern (check the stats-- around 50% Texas kids at SMU, and around 35% are Deep South kids from GA, TN, MS, AL, Carolinas, LA), Very Preppy, Known for students with $$... both are also pretty similar to Vanderbilt. Nearly identical social scenes, same colors as mentioned... I don't understand why it's so offensive to compare SMU to Ole Miss students and call them similar. I have tons of fam that went there so I may be partial. But both schools have hard-ons to become identical to their "peer" institution. Ole Miss wants to be UVA, SMU desperately wants to be Vandy.

If Ole Miss is such a crappy school and knows nothing of academics and prestige, then why is one of their largest contingency of alumni out-of-state in Highland Park? Also, Ole Miss is the 3rd or 4th most popular school of choice for HP Grads. Yah Ole Miss must be full of stupid people who know nothing of academics or prestige.

And give me a break, SMU is only ranked #71 and lets in 64% of people that apply. Our average SAT is a 1210 or something. I'd make a hefty wager that about 20% of the students made like 1350+ and are on huge scholarships, and the majority of SMU kids that you see as the "typical SMUer" that makes up a good 60-70% of the student body probably scored around a 1100. Right on par with Ole Miss.

SMU's a great place and a very fine school, but some people have this notion that we're on par with Duke, Vandy, Wake, etc. We're not -- we just charge the same for tuition.

touchy.....pet peeve of mine, the SMU / Ole Miss comparison. Some ding dong at church told me several yerars ago, "Ole Miss is a MUCH better school than SMU..", and he was serious....all I got to go on is the sorority recs I see..WEAK!!...the "attitude" of MOST Ole Missers..I don't get it...btw, I always heard that most if not all HPers go to Ole Miss because they could not get into Vandy, SMU, W&L, Tulane, Wake, Duke, etc., and they see Ole Miss as a "rich kids party school", which I guess it sort of is....academically, Ole Miss can not hold a candle to SMU, and YES!, we continue to strive to be "like" Vandy, etc.... like I said, all one needs, it seems, is a "face" to gain admin to Ole Miss..one needs a little more than that to get on the Hilltop. I still laugh about Ole Miss' prize O-Line recruit from Bartlett(?) this last season who could not gain admin to Ole Miss, academically, man...he must be one bright fella.

HixsontoLeVias: You just described my stepdaughter, a college sophomore, although her grades were slightly higher than those you mentioned. She wanted to go to OleMiss because of how cool cheerleading camp was there! And you have that demo pegged dead-on, btw. She went to LSU...but a former SMU DGer offered to give her letter of rec. Interestingly, one reason she chose LSU was because of the football team's success...which flies in the face of those that think football success doesn't affect enrollment/apps.

Sorry Southern - I don't think saying Ol Miss is not a real challenging academic environment is the same thing as saying SMU is on a par with Vandy.

However, SMU is much closer to Vandy in the academic ratings then Ol Miss is to SMU.

Lets just say Ol Miss is a fun place to spend four yrs and leave it at that. No need to say the schools are the same - they both have active greek systems - thats about it.

That said I would love to get them back o the schedule -

And by the way, other then the winless TCU beating us out of a bowl game 7-8 yrs ago - the Ol Miss game was the single hardest loss of 20 plus yrs of watching SMU football - which is saying alot.

and plus...at Ole Miss, you get to hang out with kids from Tupelo, Corinth, West Point, Memphis (Whoppee), Jackson, and an occasional dusting of Dallas / Atlanta / Birmingham........at SMU, I had friends from Chicago, St, Louis, KC, DFW, Houston, San Antonio, Miami, LA (my roomate), San Fran, Conn., Pittsburgh, New Orleans, etc., etc...a little more "worldly" than life in Oxford...but, the colors ARE the same, I will give you that. Long Live Coach Cutcliffe..why did you fire him??
