Houston Depth chart.

Postby BUS » Thu Nov 10, 2005 9:43 am

Have any of you looked at the depth chart on the houston web site. They have some pretty big boys on the D-line. I remeber them ALL around 300 DE, NG, DT and the other DE is little at 286.

Our O-line is going to have to work hard. Is the D-line fast at UH?

Another thing I noiticed is that the DS. DB are not over 6 foot tall. That leads me to think that Pellerin and Chase could have a big day. Lets plan to win!!!

Houston fans are blaming their losses on their defense. It is OK, but nothing to write home about. Statistically, they are an average team as far as pass defense and poor as far as run defense. The d-line doesn't get a lot of pressure on the QB (of course, better than SMU ). Still the Houston defense is a lot better than Rice's.

Generally, Houston is an above-average offense with an average to below-average defense. In contrast, I would say SMU has a below average offense and an average defense (trending towards above-average).

Statistically, Houston is the best offense SMU will see all year.

Actually this is a bit simplistic. In term of total yard of offense per game UH is tops but let's look at some other stats:

Offense by average yards per play:
UAB #10
A&M #11
UTEP #19
UH #22

Pass Eff.
UAB #10
UTEP #29
UH #34

Rushing Off. - Total yards per game
A&M #11
Rice #20
TCU #29
UH #34

Rush off. by average yards per play
A&M #6
UH #28
TCU #30
UAB #44

Best Scoring Off
UTEP #21
A&M #26
TCU #30
Tulsa #36
UH #40

Houstons issues this season are Run defense, Net Punting (go Blake,) and turnovers. We will need to win the turnover battle to help slow Houston.

Yeah, it is a little simplistic, but they are 13th in total offense (yards/game).

Yes, I acknowledged that up front and there is no question that Houston has a potent and balanced offense. It will be a real challenge for our defense.

Our defense has played well enough to win in seven out of nine games this year. I have stopped worrying about the defense. I think they will play OK. It is the SMU offense that worries me.

SMU offense versus UH defense is what matters

Postby Sam I Am » Thu Nov 10, 2005 3:00 pm

Fortunately the SMU strength matches up against the UH strength - our defesne versus their offense. In that case the game will be decided then by how our offense does against thier defense. Since our offense is so inconsistent, there is no telling how well we will move the move in Houston. All I can say is that at least I feel like our team has a chance to win, but I am not predicting that we will.

Our offense isn't "inconsistent," it is bad.
