Snyder has always thought highly of Bennett. How ironic would it be if Snyder hand-picked PB to be his successor, knowing that PB would do much better at KSU w/ fewer restrictions, built-in handicaps etc. I don't think it'll happen, nor do I think PB would leave SMU in the lurch, but it would be a way for PB to give his bashers the figurative finger and demonstrate just why all of his buddies told him not to take the SMU job.

1. Bennett would take the job faster than you could say "Peruna;"
2. They won't offer the job to Bennett.

Leave us "in a lurch"? We've been in a lurch since the end of the Clements Administration.

Is he from Kansas?
He's so vanilla I can't even sit here and say I don't like Patterson.
Wait .... yes I can. He coaches TCU.

Patterson went to college at some school in Manhattan, Kansas.

I had no idea that's where Patterson was from. It would be good for us if he was hired by K-State. While he might not get much respect or press for what he's accomplished, he picked up right where Franchione left off and he's gotten more out of his players than just about any coach I can think of. The Frogs would have a tough time replacing him. My guess is that Dickey from North Texas will get a look being a former player there and coaching a team that uses a similar recruiting model to K-State. I can't imagine many big time coaches beating down the door to follow Snyder's legacy in such an out of the way location.

I can. They have minimal requirements on recruiting, and an enormous budget, thanks to an army of very generous boosters. The right coach can re-create what Snyder had there a few years ago.

Quantify enormous budget. I'd be shocked if they are anywhere close to their conference-mates UT, A$M, OU, and/or Nebraska. Seems like a very difficult situation for most of the coaches in the Big 12 North who, with exception of Nebraska, come from states that lack the complete committment to football and limitless resources available to the coaches in the Big 12 South. K-State had a great run under Snyder, but the odds are stacked against his successor having similar success.

Bennett is still close with Snyder.

A 5-6 record for SMU this season would make it easier for Snyder sell Bennett to KSU.

Bennet's overall record would not hurt him, because SMU has the rep of being a coach's graveyard anyway. Fans know him in Manhattan.

The fan support at KSU is phenomenal. Bennett would have to love it, compared to the wretched fans here who left in the third quarter of a homecoming win.

I think Snyder may wait to see if Bennett can get a couple more wins.

A Big XII school cannot justify hiring a HC from another school where the coach has less than 10 wins over four years and an O'fer season. Get serious. Maybe if an unsuccessful HC were to go back and be a successful coordinator for a few years, then I woul buy it.

And Dickey isn't going to get much of a sniff, either. Newsflash: UNT is 2-7 in the Sunbelt.

For starters, they have legions of loyal fans. Very loyal. Remember when they played BYU in the Cotton Bowl? They brought 40,000 fans, and reportedly had requests for another 50,000 tickets. So there's some money there. As for overall budget, I would bet that Notre Dame is the only school in the same tax braket as Texas (read: unlimited budget), and I bet Oklahoma is next on that list, in the same league as (guessing here) Florida State, Michigan, UCLA and the like. I would think Nebraska is just a hair behind those, and K-State one level below that. Pure speculation on my part, of course, but having been to each of those schools, that's the sense I get from the way they throw money around.

So basically, you have no idea what the K-State budget is. I figured as much and I suspect it's in the lower end of the Big 12 spectrum. I was at their Cotton Bowl versus BYU and agree that they brought a big group down, but that crowd was likely the result of K-State playing in a New Year's Day bowl game for the first time in a long, long time (and maybe ever), not the fact that they have a huge, affluent following. The reality is that K-State is a rural agricultural school in the middle of nowhere in a relatively small state population wise. They might fill their stadium, but I think it holds right at or below 50,000. I'm not suggesting we're anywhere close to being in their league in terms of support or on field product, but in terms of the BCS haves and have nots, they are closer to the latter when it comes to resources. Thus, I stand by my premise that K-State is not a big time program and will have a hard time replacing Snyder with a "brand name" coach.

Out of curiosity, I went to a K-State message board and read the potential replacement posts. The consensus over there is that they'll try to get OU's defensive coordinator Brent Veneable (sp?). Other names that were mentioned were Patterson, former UH and Wyoming coach Dana Dimmel, and our very own Phil Bennett. My guess is Snyder will hand pick his successor, so maybe old Phil does have a shot. Boy, would that be both ironic and hilarious.

It wouldn't be hilarious if he goes up there and wins with a model/system along the lines of what so many are clamoring for here.

And PonyPride's post didn't say anything about KSU's fans being affluent -- just numerous.
