Hope the defense is well restedHouston's RB, Ryan Gilbert, used to play QB at Hillcrest High School in Dallas. He signed with LSU before transferring to Cougar High. He's a lot bigger now than he was then, as most college upperclassmen are, but he was in the same league with Kevin Garrett and Jessie Henderson when it comes to speed. He's unbelievably fast (or at least he used to be when he was lighter -- I don't know what he's like now).
Got to wrap up, fellas.
I used to cover him at Hillcrest. He might be the fastest HS player I ever saw. Coach Bennett talked about him at his lunch today, and said Gilbert "shredded" the Southern Miss defense on cutbacks, so I'm guessing he still has some speed -- probably a lot of it, too.
Another example of our competition of using transfers to complete their rosters. This player would have never transfered to SMU because SMU would not take a lot of his credits. Houston probably took all of his credit hours. UTEP would have. TCU would have. Tulsa would have. Etc. Get the point? SMU is at a hugh disadvantage compared to our competition. SMU continues to struggle and pile up losing seasons for a reason. It is not by accident. SMU...you either want to compete in Division 1-A or you do not. Make a decision. The current path of this athletic program in the revenue sports is on a downward spiral. Current commitments to date: 2. Not a good sign for Bennett. Houston will beat SMU easy and they will do it with many players SMU would not or did not recruit due to SMU's admission policies. Please re-read this thread before the UTEP game. Thank you for your support in my mission to expose the fraud and deceit the athletic department is perpetrating against the few fans left.
he has got an unimpeachable point. Every single team in our Division except Rice and TCU as well are loaded with quality Division 1A BCS school transfers. Look it up. Why can't SMU play this game? BCS kids didn'yt have to go to JC/CC because of poor grades-they were fully qualified. We should take these kids BEFORE messing with JC/CC players. And please spare me from the naive comments about players having to contact the school first. The only reason SMU doesn't get these kids is the transferrable hours issue.
Jimmy Tubbs got one, but I'll concede the transferable hours issue is a handicap. I suspect that it's also more difficult in football because kids who are good enough to get a BCS school offer don't typically consider SMU to begin with and thus SMU is also an afterthought for transfer purposes as well. That has to do with the old catch-22 which will continue to hamper us--we need good players to turn it around, but we need wins to be attractive to good players.
There are hundreds of Division 1-A football players in the D/FW area. Assume 20 leave their respective schools and transfer. Why can't SMU get 1-5 a year? If it is known SMU will start taking college credit hours, the word will spread. Let's say we get 1 or 2 transfers a year and 4-5 Juco players a year. We can then get the rest from high school and spend more time recruiting higher profile recruits knowing we already have a good portion of the class commited. A formula for success. Remember Alexander Webb from NW? That still hurts.
jtstang you just are not right on this issue. There are plenty of BCS Division 1A transfers looking for ANY school. TCU, Tulsa, UTEP and UH prove that. As BillyJoe says there are plenty from the Metroplex. I GUARANTEE you we have these kids knock on our door all the time.
And TCU, Tulsa, UTEP and UH are s*holes compared to SMU..we should be dominating them at this game, not just getting our fair share.
