Could/Would this happen?

First I must, as usual, preface my remarks with my hope that SMU wins its last game and goes on to be 14-0 next year with the CUSA Champ and Bowl win under Bennett.

That out of the way, suppose SMU loses one or both of its remaining two games...one of them badly. I know many have said K-State wouldn't want PB b/c of his record, but would/could he resign to go get his old DC job back?

Not that that's what I want to happen. It's just kind of slow on the board the last couple of days.

I doubt that K-State would pay him the $500K plus he allegedly makes here to be it's defensive coordinator. Moreover, while the SMU head coaching job is on the lower rung of the coaching hierarchy, it's still a head job. Accordingly, I doubt Bennett is coaching in Manahattan next season unless he gets canned (which I don't think will happen) or K-State loses its collective mind and makes him the head coach.

There are 119 Div. 1A coaching jobs. Last year, there were 23 openings total. That was a lot. 2004, there were 15. 2003, there were 14. Other years, about a dozen. About a third (the best jobs) are going to filled with existing HC's and two or three more are going to be internal hires. So you are looking at eight or nine jobs available a year being a HC at the Div. 1A level. The point is, it is a rare opportunity.

Further, the average HC has an enormous ego. Period. They don't quit because they don't think they have done poor jobs and they don't second-guess.

HC's don't quit to take coordinator jobs.
