1. Eliminate Turnovers
Houston's pretty fast on defense, but protecting the ball -- like every week -- is vital.
2. SMU Defensive Line
Specifically, the defensive tackles. Haywood has to continue causing headaches for opposing offenses, and Bonds must have a strong game, too. Houston's tackles are big and athletic, and their center is pretty good. Haywood needs to continue his knack for getting into the backfield, pressuring Kolb, making Gilbert change direction before he hits top speed, and and disrupting the tackles when they pull -- which they do a lot. Bonds needs to create a big push and occupy blockers, allowing the DEs to get into the backfield and allowing LBs to run free to the ball.
3. Kicking Game
SMU has a real weapon in Chris McMurtray, he of the school-record 11 straight field goals without a miss. Use him. He's got a big-time leg, and we need to take advantage of that.
4. Short and Intermediate Passes
Houston's linebackers are good, but their strength is pressing up and stuffing the run. Run Kennedy, Chase, Pellerin, Vincent Chase across the middle a few times, and Houston will have to drop its linebackers off the line a little. At that point ....
5. DeMyron Martin
He's a big, strong kid and he's young. Feed the ball to this young man until he says he's too tired. My guess is that unless he missed the team bus and ran to Houston, he won't ever say he's tired.
