National pub for Jonas Rutledge

Big Ups to Jonas - #3 was named honorable mention All-America by Street & Smith's College Football 2002 magazine. Too bad a few others (Vic Viloria, Chris Cunningham, John Hampton, Kevin Garrett, etc.) didn't get the same honor.

It's got to be something in the name … North Texas DB Jonas Buckles also got named honorable mention All-America.

But it's always nice to see a Pony getting some pub in a national mag.

Also from Street & Smith's:
• Georgia Tech DE Greg Gathers (who nearly signed with SMU) was named first-team All-America
• Texas Tech QB Kliff Kingsbury (who will be in Ford Stadium this year) was named honorable mention (as was the overhyped Chris Simms -- honorable mention is about right until he wins a game of some importance)
• Hawaii QB Timmy Chang was named honorable mention
• Tulane RB Mewelde Moore (who committed to SMU before switching to Tulane) was named honorable mention
• Texas Tech WR Wes Welker (see him Sept. 7 at Ford Stadium) was named honorable mention
• Rice DE Brandon Green was named honorable mention
• TCU LB LeMarcus McDonald was named honorable mention
• Arkansas LB (and big-time SMU recruit) Tony Bua was named honorable mention
• Texas DE Kalen Thornton (and brother of SMU recruit Kyle Thornton) was named honorable mention
• Navy punter John Skaggs (at SMU Aug. 31) was named honorable mention

And most baffling of all:
• Nevada RB Chance Kretschmer was named third team All-America, and is listed as a preseason candidate for the Doak Walker Award

It's about time Jonas got some national attention. Say what you want about the WAC, about our lack of TV exposure, or any other excuse, but he's as gifted a cornerback as there is out there.

Not so fast my friend!

We were recruiting Greg Gathers pretty hard, but I didn't think we were ever close to signing him. Sure would have been nice to see him at SMU, though.
