My take from Section 105

[OC Mustang]

Sat down on the 1st row, Section 105...was 2nd game for the year that I actually got to go and see...took my oldest son, Carson (eight years old), and we had a blast! His only other college game was USC vs. Wash State (2003), but Matt Leinart didn't give him his arm sweatband at the end of the game...Jared Romo did. He came over to speak to him and another little guy who got his football autographed by Guidry as well.

I hope Romo reads this board, or I hope that somebody can get word to him. That single selfless act...didn't cost Romo or anybody a thing...that little gesture pretty much made my kid a Mustang for life. Holy Cow that was the bomb! My son was jabbering all the way back to East Texas about how he wants his jersey number (he plays Pop Warner football) changed from 11 to 13...

Was anybody down that way who may have seen us? I got to meet Mustangs35SMU down that way. Anybody else? We were just below a really rowdy bunch (by SMU standards)...man oh man was it great! I wondered where the board bunch was if you all attended the game.

My take from the peanut gallery...the guys looked great today, and though I am concerned about recruiting, I think we got a great look today at what we ought to have next season, plus a little. Willis and Phillips just need to get on the stick and learn this offense cold. I liked what I saw on the sidelines with one exception. What are the assistants who are offensive skill position coaches doing during the game? I do not see them talking to anybody but the O-line on the bench. What's that about? I know that I am used to watching playoff-bound high school teams, but Marshall's assistants NEVER stop talking to their players during the game.

Is that just a high school thing?

I know just how much that means... another Romo - Mike - gave me his chin strap when I was just a couple years older than your son. It's something that stays with you. I'm glad your son had a great time.

Romo was really good yesterday on the field as well. He came a long way this year. Too bad he wont be here next year.

It was really neat to see this post. Jerad is my cousin, and I was in the stands along with his Grandpa from Oregon, Aunt and her three kids from California, and his Parents. We just arrived home, my house in San Antonio, and went straight to the computer to read the posts on Ponyfans, and the articles that were written about the game. When my aunt read this post, tears began to fall from her eyes. It was so moving to see that Jerad was able to bring joy to your son. Jerad has always been a great person, and has never let his athleticism go to his head.

During our victory celebration last night, Jerad mentioned to the family that he gave his chin strap, arm sweatband, and other items to some children at the game even though he had the feeling that he might get a little flack for it from the coaches. He was not worried because it was something he wanted to do.

I also thought that you might want to know that Jerad's number from youth football through junior college was 11. He wanted that number when he arrived at SMU, but it was taken. His next favorite number was 13, so he chose it. It’s pretty neat that your son's jersey is 11 and he wants to change it to 13.

We will definitely make him aware of your kind words. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for the peek inside the family, sage4man .... Jerad is a great guy, and it's good to have you on our site (hopefully he's made a PonyFan out of you, and you'll continue to follow the Ponies even after he graduates.)

My personal favorite Jerad Romo moment: in the Baylor (I think) game, he was running through the right side of the line, when he got gang-tackled by the opposing team picture, or so it seemed. Most of them let up after the whistle blew the play dead. As is Romo's custom, he kept the legs going, and one defensive tackle held on. Romo turned around and swung at him -- all 300-plus pounds of him. It got a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which hacked me off at the time, but I have a great deal of respect for a QB willing to mix it up with the big ugly guys on the defensive line. Whether he was having a good day or a bad day, he is simply fearless.

And, if my math is right (remember, there's a reason I'm a writer), isn't Romo's career record as a starter 5-5? It's been a while since we had a QB around here who batted .500 for his career. Romo came a long way this year, and became a real asset to the offense.

I've enjoyed watching Jerad this year and seeing the improvement in his game and his maturity grow. Wish we had another year with him here, but he had a definite impact this year and I apprecite all his hard work and dedication along with the rest of the team. Jerad made a big impact in contributing to the rebuilding of our team. Thanks Jerad and best of luck to you in the future.

i'm in 105 row 9, who were those folks between you and me that had the cowbells? great for making noise when we're on defense, but don't clang those damn things when there's no play on the field. gave me a f'ing headache. the win made up for it.

btw - i excused the kids who were ringing the bells during the breaks, but not their parents. must have been drunk.

Those "Mississippi State-like" fans were right in front of me...someone told me they were football player parents?? BTW, HtL brought home two W's this weekend, as we attended the women's hoop game v. monroe on Friday night.....who is the big guy, sideburns, wore a basketball head hat a few years back?? Saw him at the womens game, UTEP game..is he the super fan? I think I saw BUS as well..big dude, throwing around a football? Looks like he could still play right gaurd....nice to see lance with Joe bays.....good weekend to be a pony fan.

This is a fun thread. I sat in 202 or 203 with a couple of DeMyron Martin's family members, a large contingency of swim coaches and former swimmers, and the Chase family. Think I initially ticked off the Martin family when they asked about Johnny Fitzgerald -- how long he'd been on the team, what year he was. Didn't get the nicest of looks when I said that he was the best athlete on the team! Had to work in an Eric Dickerson comparison to cheer them up after that stupid comment. The swim team -- especially Coach Sinnott -- was very loud and rowdy. And Mr. Chase was hilarious with his megaphone. I may move up there from my seat on the 20th row of 102...
