On the verge..

As this season comes to a close we celebrate an improvement from last years record. However, one cannot help but feel a little frustrated with the "what ifs."

One more win and we would have been bowl-eligible. That doesn't mean we would have gone to a bowl (although I think we probably would have) but it would have put us in the same category as all the other good football programs in the country.

Of our losses, only two were blow outs. 4 of the losses were by a touchdown or less.

A little luck here and there and this team could have been 9-2. Yes, I know that sounds crazy, but it is indeed true.

So we can look forward to next year knowing that we have the talent to be a good team. We have a weaker schedule than this year and have a shot at a good start to the season for the first time in a long long time.

I hope we set our sights on at least 8 wins next year. That whole conference championship issue will take care of itself.

I agree. But the way I'm looking at it...I'm just happy to even be able to think about the what if's.

I think the important question is, for the future of the program, whether the 2005 record is good enough to support an improvement in recruiting.

Just where is SMU at present in terms of interest, offers, and commitments? And who else is after the same guys?

We had a lot of what if's. What if Bobby Chase hadn't caught that hail mary? What if the ref had ruled Marshall fumbled instead of an incompletion allowing video review of the call? Two plays both changed the outcomes of games. We could still have been 5-6, 4-7, or 6-5. We had an improved year. Next year, we need to go bowling.
