Congrats Mustangs

Postby UTEPDallas » Mon Nov 28, 2005 11:49 am

Obviously, SMU was the better team Saturday. I was at the game and UTEP made many mistakes and the Mustangs took advantage of them. Funny thing is.....this was my second game at Ford Stadium this year. I was there when the Mustangs beat TCU...... and now UTEP. :( Next year...SMU should be this year's Tulsa and a bowl game should come next year. Also, I liked when your crowd got really loud after by the 3rd quarter. I think better times have arrived at the Hilltop. Good luck next year SMU (except when you play UTEP). 8)

Go Miners!!!!!

P.S. I'll say two things that you might not like: 1) UTEP had a bigger crowd and 2) our marching band gave a better halftime show than yours. Like I said here after you beat TCU....it's not good when the opponent brings higher crowds than the host.

We could solve that crowd thing if your people would just stay home, and as far as the band goes, I did not get to witness the two perform but I find your comments very doubtful. Thanks for the congrats.

I'll say one thing I really didn't like - the UTEP cheerleaders running to the middle of our field and waving their flags! Do they do that at every road game?

Utep brought a heck of a crowd and very enthusiastic. Much bigger than past years but no doubt that was because the Miners were playing for a championship. Everybody in the region has a large alum base in and around Dallas, so we always get an earful of opposing fans most who dont get to see their team play very often.

I really like the name of the Utep dancing girls I must say: The Golddiggers. Nice.

Not even on their best day. They looked like every other High School Band in Texas. You probably could place in the top 10 in Texas UIL Band competitions.

One comment and one question. First, the UTEP flag waving onfield at our 50 yard line pissed me off. Enjoyed the counter when our guys took the flags to the same spot later in the game. Some might have also noticed the female cheerleader planting her pom at midfield after the game was over a la Terrell Owens.

Question. Is it not a breach of band etiquette to play only to your own side when visiting? UTEP's band had its collective back to the SMU side during their entire halftime performance.

Having said all that, UTEP is a credit to the conference. It's nice to remain in the same league with our friends from El Paso.

Most bands in the generic UTEP style tend to never turn around during their show. I guess it would be just preference which side they play to. I do remember last time they came they played to the home side.

I didn't see what the UTEP cheerleader did....if it happened...then shame on her. As for the male cheerleaders running with the UTEP flag on the field...I don't see anything wrong with it. I wouldn't get pissed if the SMU cheerleaders did the same at the Sun Bowl. I think it's all about perspective. At least UTEP brings their cheerleaders and band to the game. I was in El Paso for the UTEP-Tulsa game....and the Golden Hurricane didn't bring their cheerleaders. Neither did UAB. Anyway, the game is over, the Mustangs won and I'm glad SMU is finally turning the corner. See you next year at the Sun Bowl.

I might do that....since I live in the Uptown/Turtle Creek/Oak Lawn area....it's not hard for me to make it to a SMU game. I might go when UTEP has a bye week or when I can't make it to El Paso to see the Miners play.

On the contrary - we love having Miner fans and all other fans until the time when we will predominate at Ford. Hopefully, some day, the SMU
ticket will be hard one to get.

I sat right in the middle of UTEP fans on the east side, and I must say they were friendly and fair minded. (not like some others that have visited.) It was fund to hear the UTEP roar in the first half gradually
disappear. Almost total silence and staring disbelief by 4th quarter.

The UTEP band was good but they can't hold a candle to the excellent
Mustang Band.

The mistakes the UTEP quarterback kept making were caused by great
defensive play on the part of SMU. Harrassing the quarterback and
excellent downfield coverage led to interceptions and fumbles. This was no fluke win because they made mistakes. We earned it.

PONYBOY was right on the money!

We were all really offended by UTEP's cheerleaders running their flags onto the middle of the field like that...maybe that is ok when you're on your home turf, but on an away game, it is VERY rude and it smacks of poor taste and no class.

As for the BAND....1) the Mustang Band was better. I agree with another poster who said their style is more unique than UTEP, which looked like any other high school band out there.

2) I was in band for 6 years back in the day before I finally got out sophomore year of high school, and it DEFINITELY is a breach of etiquette not to play to the home side crowd. It is "ok" to play at least half of the show to your own crowd, but to play the entire show to your own fans is rude and incorrect.

Sooooooo, somebody over at UTEP needs to tell their cheerleaders and band to brush up on their sportsmanship...

speaking of etiquette, I will say that most all of the Utep fans cheered loudly and graciously when the Mustang band finished performing. I didnt like the flag run to midfield either, kind of T.O like. I also dont like it when visiting bands come into our stadium and get obnoxious with the artificial tuba noise or whatever it is (i'm band challenged). Baylors band was horrible about that. Our band doesnt use the noise makers, opposing teams shouldnt take advantage of that by coming into our stadium and pulling that. Play your fight song, cheer and have a good time, but dont try to be part of the game.

There was some idiot in the west side stands that couldn't keep his mouth shut. It got so bad my mom was offering up money to see someone punch him in the mouth. I told her I would do it if she would bail me out of jail. Unfortunately he didn't return for the second half, guess he was all out of witty remarks seeing as they were taking a beating.
