SMU season MVPClearly it would need to be a defensive player.
1) Paul Sturdivant SS 2x CUSA player of the week. 3 picks, 112 tackles/63 solo, 4 TFL/3 solo, 11 passes defended, 1 fumble recovery. 2) Adrian Haywood DT, CUSA player of the week. Really came on the last five games. 1 pick (remember he is a DT,) 42 tackles/25 solo, 13 TFL/11 solo/5 sacks, 2 passes defended, 2 fumbles forced. 3) Chris McMurtray Kicker, Made every kick during the CUSA season 17/17 including the career long 49 yarder at the end of the game to beat UH. Set, by a long shot, the SMU career/single season consecutive FG record. Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
Ouch, my bad and apologies to all concerned.

Paul Sturdivant was an OLB and his Sr. year was 1976. He didn't complete the year as he got a season ending injury against Alabama that year. Joe is Paul's son. And Joe had one heck of a year.
I agree with mrydel that Haywood was the man this year.
My pick is McMurtray. The guy set all kinds of school records and won a couple of games for us. Sturdivant and Haywood had some great performances in individual games, but the kicker was solid all year long.
Plus, like the heisman, give it to a senior because it is his last chance at the award...
My pick is DeMyron Martin! If he had played in the Baylor game we would have won and could be bowling right now.
I think by far Martin is the offensive MVP...team MVP I'm not sure but offensive him or Bobby Chase.
too close to call, but on defense I'd go with a tie between Sturdivant and Haywood with D.D.Lee and Nnabufie right there with them
On offense, another tie between Martin and Chase with Romo right up there as well. If you take out the ECU fiasco where he cost SMU the game by throwing 4 INTs, Romo really protected the ball with only 3 other INTs all season. Been a while since we had that kid of consistency at QB
My vote for MVP goes to Chris McMurtray,1st in most FG's in a season, 1st in most FG's in a single game, 1st most points by a kicker in a single game,1st in career FG %, 1st in season FG %, 1st most consecutive FG's, 8th in career points(look at the names he passed) SMU's leading scorer in 2003,2004,and 2005(second place was not close) he is in second place in 4 categories. He had a game winner at Houston and had 4 field goals vs UTEP and 16 points. Conference player of the week Twice
Joe should get Defensive Player of the Year. He had 112 tackles, 11 passes defended and two fumble recoveries and four interceptions. He is the first DB to have over 100 tackles since 1991. Conference player of the week twice. Haywood played good but not the entire year like Joe did. Romo should get the Offensive Player of the Year. He had 1781 yards passing and 174 yds rushing. Even by the most conservative standards(spliting his passing yardage in half/half going to the receiver) he still accounts for 891 passing and 174 rushing, that is 1065 and that is 31% of our total offense for the year. Martin has 25% for the year and Chase has 18% for the year
I knew it was a good omen when I walked up to the Avis board at the rental car center at DFW and while scanning for my name and space number I saw "Sturdivant." I told my wife I bet they were here from Georgia to watch the game. Joe, if you read this, did your family rent with Avis?
Also, while I'm talking travel things, as I was driving to the game from east Texas, I noticed a black Audi with a Mustang Club sticker on the window on I20. Belong to anyone here?
