I received my undergrad at K-State and my MBA at SMU. I have season football tickets for both K-State and SMU. I make it to about 2 - 3 games of each school every season from Atlanta where I live.
Phil Bennett is still very popular among K-State people. KSU fans loved his aggressive defense and some where hoping SMU would not work out so he may consider coming back to Manhattan as DC for Bill "Moses" Snyder again. The DC we have had the past 2 years is not real popular as he went with more zone and "read and react" crap...lost our mean attitude in the process.
As an SMU season ticket holder and fan, I hope Phil stays at SMU. I believe he is in the process of getting SMU back on solid footing. Phil is a tremendous recruiter and has something to sell TX recruits this season.
Most K-Stater's would be excited, myself included, if he were to come back as HC. The issue I see if Phil were to take the KSU job...would be sky high expectations. K-State had the 2nd youngest roster in D1 this year and will have 18 returning starters. KSU is 10 points away from 8-3 and a Big 12 North Title this year due to stupid game changing mistakes...much like SMU close losses this year. PB would be expected to win the North first year back IMHO.
Kansas City Star Columist, Jason Whitlock, mentioned PB in his column today stating PB may be the victim of bad timing for the KSU job simply because his SMU rebuilding job is not yet complete. I tend to agree and therefore would like to see him stay on The Hilltop. I personally believe following a coaching legend is hard and whoever steps in for Bill Snyder will have a hard act to follow and may be gone in 4 years.
My brother in Kansas told me this evening word up there is PB did interview for the K-State job this morning. No word on outcome.
