Joe Barton Republican congressman from Ennis, Texas has set up
hearings next Wednesday on the BCS (Bowl Championship Series).
Rep. Barton is the chairman of the House Energy, and Commerce
subcommittee charged with regulating the United State's sports
industry.

Since he surely knows the Mustangs, and the lower half of ncca Div 1a's
plight, this might be a way to start to the end of the monopoly known as
the BCS.

Yes, it really sucked when the Gooberment broke up Ma Bell. Man, communications have just not been anywhere near as good as when Ma Bell had a communications monopoly. Why now, we don't have rotary phones, incredible high prices for long distance and such a lack of choices. Man, for the good old days of monopolies. One company with pathetic choices and ungodly price is just what we need. Yeap, anytime the Gooberment gets involved things just go to hell in a hand basket. Monopolies are not illegal until they use their monopoly market position to manipulate the market. Those monopolies that usual survive are heavily regulated by the Gooberment. The BCS is a cartel that functions as a monopoly. Eventually, the BCS will become the object of Gooberment scrutiny.

The biggest threat to small private schools is not the BCS but the up and coming second and third tier state schools.

A cartel breaks up if its members turn against each other. The money is so big in the BCS bowls that the "haves" want to "have more." This year Oregon was left out of the riches. Last year California was left out of the riches. The BCS cartel will try to molify its members by tweaking the rules once again. The worst thing about the present bowl schedule is the 30 day wait for the teams playing for the championship. If Div. 1-AA can have a 16 team playoff, anybody can. Our best bet for breaking up the BCS is to have its members testify about the inequities. It will also help if the non-BCS conferences lobby once again to get more than just a fifth BCS bowl that will only be filled by maybe one non-BCS school. Fresno State showed that a good WAC team can hang with USC. Since the recent Congressional hearings about oil prices, gas has come down $1.00 per gallon. Let's see if something good can come out of the BCS hearings. Anybody know what prompted our Texas congressman to start this?
