A Post From the Texas A&M Board

Postby perunapride » Tue Dec 06, 2005 1:04 am

Just thought I would pass this post from the A&M board along.

SMU's Phil Bennett to be next A&M DC Reply

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A little insider info for you all: look for SMU's HC Phil Bennett to get the A&M DC offer in a couple weeks. A prior A&M defensive coach under Slocum, Bennett guided the Aggies to the national top 10 in every major defensive category including third in total defense in 1995. Bennett has also been DC for Iowa State, K-State, Purdue, TCU, and LSU. His SMU years haven't been very luxerious and the A&M DC probably seems more highly esteemed. A jump from HC to assistant? Tennessee's David Cutcliffe just did it.

Yeah, but didn't Cutcliffe get fired at Ole Miss? If so, he needed a job.
Bennett loves A&M, to be sure, but I just don't see it.

Should Bennet decide that he wants to spend the rest of his career as a DC, then he will move to A$M. Bennett has proven he can be a successful DC. He is one winning season away from becoming a desired HC property. If his ambition is to be an Aggie DC for the rest of his life with little chance of getting a BCS HC position, then the DC move makes sense. Otherwise, a Tx A$M DC position signals that Bennett is not comfortable in the HC position and doesn't want to the risk needed to prove himself as a BCS HC candidate.

It seems a stretch that PB could get along with that prissy Franchione.

I thought he was only the DC at K-state, and while he coached on the defensive side of the ball, wasn't the DC at any of the other schools.....am I mistaken?

Agreed. Those zealots are so delusional that several years ago before they hired Fran, I had colleagues from that cult telling me they were going to hire Jimmy Johnson. Going to A&M to be on Fran's staff during his swan song season is utterly ridiculous. Maybe PB will be a candidate for their HC job when Fran the bust gets canned after another mediocre season.

He was the second choice for the KSU HC job. Why would he go to TAMU to be a DC? Aggie fans are sure desperate.

Exactly, only a HC position would pull him there. Besides, he has something to prove here before bailing.

It would be a ridiculous move for Bennett to step down a rung & go to a floundering program. He was seriously in the running for the K-State HC position & many up this way are dissapointed he did not take the job.
