Attached is a link to a pretty remarkable article on Leach and the Red Raiders. It is very long and does mention the confrontation with Phil Bennett. "Is this the future of football or a lunatic? Discuss!" Linda Richmond, SNL

Leach is an absolute freak. One hell of a football coach but a freak non the less. Give him credit though, he has put Texas Tech on the map & has clearly passed A&M as the 2nd best program in the State of Texas.

This has to be the funniest quote in the article...
Now Texas Tech had a 39-point lead over A.&M. and the ball and was moving forward as rapidly as ever. To minimize its humiliation, the A.&M. offense had been running plays meant to use up time and get the team out of Lubbock....Up in the sky boxes, the wife of an Aggie assistant coach insulted every female Red Raider in earshot by saying that at least she lived in College Station instead of Lubbock.
Is anyone else laughing their [deleted] off like I am? Granted, Lubbock is a [deleted] hole, but in my book of [deleted] places to live, College Station is right up there.

As his team raced onto the field, he gazed into the stands filled with screaming fans and wondered about the several thousand "cadets" from Texas A.&M. clustered in one end zone. They wear military uniforms and buzz cuts, holler in unison and stand at attention the entire game. "How come they get to pretend they are soldiers?" he asked. "The thing is, they aren't actually in the military. I ought to have Mike's Pirate School. The freshmen, all they get is the bandanna. When you're a senior, you get the sword and skull and crossbones. For homework, we'll work pirate maneuvers and stuff like that."
I am beginning to soften on Leach. Anyone that digs at the cult members of TAMU and wants to start his own pirate school is my kind of guy. Also, he has a thing for Hawaiian shirts and flip flops. I never knew we had this much in common.

Leach is still a jerk for trying to score one more time in the final
moments of the 04 game. I've read about a third of the article,
and he reminds me of Hayden Fry's innovative ideas on offense.
Starting to maybe end up liking the guy.
"The first time Mike's offense came out on the field everyone is
like, Whoa. He has that play he calls the Ninja - when they all line up on
one end. I'm not sure anyone had ever seen the Ninja. It was just a
shock effect. Mike's personality was like that, too."
Saw the "Ninja" in junior high in practice. Probably like most people
at sometime. I remember most of the LB's yelled "Richard" for a right
shift of our 4-3. Not anywhere nearly enough to cover it I thought
whizzing in my pants laughing to myself.
This "Ninja" had been designed by Coach (Steve) McCarty who led our
8th grade team to an undefeated year, and that grade's district
championship in his first job after college. Coach McCarty retired as AD
at SFA last summer.

He may be the greatest offensive mind ever to stalk the sidelines, but you don't throw for the end zone on the four up two touchdowns when all you have to do is take a knee. You just don't.
And the '04 SMU contest wasn't an isolated incident. The fact that Leach doesn't get why other coaches get upset with him just further solidifies in my mind why he's the biggest jerk in modern collegiate sports.
I hope Tech never wins another game with that guy at the helm. May he rot in coaching hell.
